Remy Ma Blaming Victims Of Sexual Assault For Being Too “Scared” To Report
Article via Madame Noir
The “State Of The Culture,” is rape culture.
The latest heated debate between media personality Scottie Beam and rapper Remy Ma on Revolt’s digital show, “State Of The Culture,” was a harsh reminder that it’s not just men upholding the systems of patriarchy that lambast sexual assault victims, it’s women too.
As the hosts began to tackle the topic of Bill Cosby’s recent conviction and sentencing for the 2004 rape of Andrea Constand, the lines in the sand were drawn in fire, with Scottie speaking on behalf of victims, and Remy choosing to focus on the “responsibility” of survivors to come forward immediately after assault takes place.
“It’s not easy reliving and recounting these situations that you go through that are extremely traumatic. It’s not that easy. Rape kits, having to be touched and examined all over again after you’ve been violated, is not easy. And also on top of that, having people like you sit here and say you don’t believe them.” Scottie explained to Remy.
Remy dug in her heels on her point saying, “Unfortunately, part of the procedure is convincing people about what happened.”
Scottie quipped back explaining that the entire examination process is re-traumtazing for many victims and added, “Who wants to go through that?” Continuing, “It’s not fair for you to say, you gotta come out..you can’t even save yourself at that moment.”
Remy fired off, “But you do though.” The Bronx lyricist went on to say she doesn’t believe all 60 of Cosby’s alleged accusers were telling the truth. And in her closing statements, she reiterated that if she was violated, she would say something. And women need to do the same.
“If I’m violated nothing on this planet..maybe that’s what we need to do as women. As women, we need to stand up a little more. Don’t be scared to come out.”
Continuing, “As women, this always underlying ‘I’m scared, I was afraid, I was this..’ I think they are valid. But I think as women, we have a responsibility as well, not just to ourselves, but to other women. Because if I’m violated…I want something to be done. I don’t want them just in jail. I want them violated like I’ve been violated…I want you to not use your d*ck ever again,” the 38-year-old concluded.
Beyond her suggesting some sort of vigilante retribution, Remy point’s are dangerous and hurtful on two accounts. One, she is shaming victims who never spoke out or spoke out “too late” by implying they are cowards for not seeking justice within a “reasonable” time period. Her opinion does not acknowledge the literal PTSD assault victims have to overcome to even begin the process of advocating for themselves. Beyond the physical wounds, which in some cases can include bleeding, bruising, difficulty walking, and tearing, the psychological damage that comes from surviving rape includes suicidal thoughts, depression, disassociation, fear, guilt, numbness, distrust of others, and helplessness, to name a few. For Remy to insinuate women are weak for not being able to overcome these mental and physical barriers before some arbitrary deadline is disappointing, to say the least. It’s stubborn stances like these that keep survivors of sexual assault psychologically gagged in their trauma and assailants roaming free.
Second, as Black women, we often see other black women–our mothers, sisters, aunties, friends and cousins as our safety net and our only real allies in this fight for equality and physical safety. To see one of our own victim blame evokes feelings of a deep seeded betrayal. How can you choose to focus on the victim being too “scared” to come forward, versus shifting your attention to the societal ills of toxic masculinity that perpetuates rape culture in our communities? It is the responsibility of rapists not to rape. Period. It’s not what the victim was wearing. It’s not where they were going. It’s not whether or not they were drinking. And their culpability sure as hell isn’t dependent on when they decide to report, if they ever do.
To survivors of sexual assault, there is no “expiration” date for your story. You are brave in silence. You are brave in your shaky voice. You are brave in your loud outcry. And I hear you and believe you.
If you are a survivor of sexual assault, you can call 800.656.HOPE (4673) to be connected with a trained staff member from a sexual assault service provider.

Kenan Thompson: Kanye West held ‘SNL’ cast ‘hostage’ during Trump rant
Kenan Thompson‘s 16th season on “Saturday Night Live” kicked off with something of a head scratch this weekend, thanks in part to Kanye West’s closing, pro-Trump comments.
“He voiced his opinion, very loudly, for a long time,” the comedian recalled on Monday’s episode of “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” “We’re all entitled to our opinion, but you know, I don’t know if that’s the moment, necessarily, to hold people hostage like that, but hey.”
Following the opening monologue, Thompson said he got to “watch the circus unfold” from afar, as West brought the cast on stage after his performance. Thompson, who preferred to watch the musical act on TV, was happy he stayed backstage.
“As soon as he said, ‘Hey, join me up on stage, everybody,’ I was like, ‘Oh, there goes the little cheese in the mousetrap.’ It’s going down,” Thompson said. “I felt so bad for those guys, because it’s hard to stand there and not be able to debate somebody who is going so far against your personal opinion, and just stand there and take it.”
He continued, “We are fair. We’re in a service business, we try to cater to the host, make sure they have a good show and what not, and then when musical guests come in and they’re a little bit crazy, maybe they’re a little bit crazy, we let them have that. But we don’t judge, we’re not there to judge.”
West received a flurry of boos inside Studio 8H in response to his rant supporting President Trump.
“There are so many times I talk to like a white person about this and they say, ‘How could you like Trump? He’s racist.’ Well, if I was concerned about racism I would’ve moved out of America a long time ago,” West said.
While Trump, 70, applauded West’s remarks and slammed “SNL,” the Yeezy mastermind later called for the abolition of the 13th Amendment before clarifying his remarks.
“Not abolish but. let’s amend the 13th amendment,” West tweeted Sunday. “We apply everyone’s opinions to our platform.”

#MeToo-Themed College Comedy Series From Whitney Cummings & Lee Daniels In Works At Amazon
2 Broke Girls co-creator Whitney Cummings has teamed with Empire co-creator Lee Daniels for a timely half-hour comedy, which is in development at Amazon. The untitled project, co-created by Cummings and Daniels and starring Cummings, hails from Fox 21 TV Studios and Amazon Studios.
Co-written by Cummings and Daniels, the comedy revolves around the staff of the Ombudsman’s office at a college that navigates PC culture and the #metoo climate. The lead character, played by Cummings, must reconcile the dissonance between different generations of feminism, and the struggle to reconcile our primal desires, and socially constructed identities with current ethical obligations regarding race, class, and gender.
Cummings and Daniels set it up the project at Fox 21 a couple of months ago via Daniels’ overall deal at 20th Century Fox TV. After a bidding war, the comedy landed at Amazon for development. Daniels is set to direct the potential pilot.
As it marks its first year anniversary, the #MeToo movement continues to be a major force for social change, toppling powerful businessmen and politicians and, most recently factoring into the selection of the next Supreme Court Justice. With White House pick Brett Kavanaugh facing sexual assault accusations from the time he was at Georgetown Prep and Yale, the #MeToo discussion has focused on high school and college.
Lee, an Oscar nominee for Precious, is the co-creator/executive producer of the Fox/20th TV drama series Empire and Star. He also executive produces the Fox/20th TV comedy pilot Culture Clash starring 2 Broke Girl alumna Beth Behrs.
This marks the first TV staring vehicle for Cummings since her self-titled NBC comedy series, which she also created and executive produced. Cummings, who also co-created and executive produced the long-running CBS comedy series 2 Broke Girls, recently served as executive producer/.co-showrunner on ABC’s highly rated Roseanne revival. Cummings and Daniels are repped by CAA.

Kanye West wants Donald Trump and Colin Kaepernick to meet, talk ‘until the conversation turns to love’
Kanye West, who has remained defiant amid backlash over his support for President Donald Trump, said that he reached out to Colin Kaepernick to try to arrange a meeting between the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback and the president, saying, “we keep having the conversation until the conversation turns to love.”
“I’ve been calling Colin this morning, reaching him, so I can bring Colin to the White House and we can remove that s— of b—— statement and we can be on the same page,” the rapper, donning a “Make America Great Again” hat, told TMZ on Monday.
At a campaign rally in Alabama on Sept. 22, 2017, Trump ignited a feud with the National Football League and players who take a knee during the National Anthem to protest racism, where he called on NFL owners to fire them, suggesting they say “get that s– of a b—- off the field! He’s fired, he’s fired!”
During a visit to The Fader offices on Thursday, West was spotted sporting the red Trump “MAGA” hat with a Kaepernick sweatshirt.
Kaepernick, who was the first to take a knee during the playing of the National Anthem in 2016 to protest racism and police brutality, and others who followed suit have been at the center of Trump’s ongoing fight with the league.
“We never give up on anyone,” the rapper told TMZ. “Let me even make that more positive, we move forward, we give love, we keeping going, we keep having the conversation until the conversation turns to love.”

Ruby Rose Named Most Dangerous Public Figure on the Internet
Cybersecurity firm McAfee says users interested in the actress are most likely to land on websites that carry viruses or malware.
Ruby Rose has played some dangerous characters, like an inmate in Orange Is the New Black and a scientist battling a prehistoric shark in The Meg. But the actress herself is now officially dangerous.
Cybersecurity firm McAfee on Tuesday crowned Rose the most dangerous celebrity on the Internet. No other celebrity was more likely to land users on websites that carry viruses or malware.
Reality TV star Kristin Cavallari finished behind Rose at No. 2, followed by actress Marion Cotillard (No. 3), the original Wonder Woman Lynda Carter (No. 4), actress Rose Byrne (No. 5), Debra Messing (No. 6), reality TV star Kourtney Kardashian (No. 7), actress Amber Heard (No. 8), morning TV show host Kelly Ripa (No. 9) and actor Brad William Henke as No 10.
Rose may have gotten a burst of online interest when she was named to play Batwoman on an upcoming CW series.
The survey is meant to highlight the danger of clicking on suspicious links. McAfee urges Internet users to consider risks associated with searching for downloadable content and always apply updated security fixes. The company used its own site ratings to compile the celebrity list and used searches on Google, Bing and Yahoo.
“In our hyper-connected world, it’s important for consumers to think before they click to be sure that they are landing on safe digital content and protecting themselves from cybersecurity threats that may be used to infect their devices or steal their identity,” writes Gary Davis, chief consumer security evangelist at McAfee. “So whether you’re looking up what Ruby did on the latest Orange Is the New Black episode, or what Kristin Cavallari wore to the latest awards show, make sure you’re searching the Internet safely.”
Rose deposes last year’s most dangerous celeb, Avril Lavigne. That top 10 included Bruno Mars, Carly Rae Jepsen, Zayn Malik, Celine Dion, Calvin Harris, Justin Bieber, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Katy Perry and Beyonce.
Musicians on the latest list took a hit. Adele was the highest ranked musician at No. 21, followed by Shakira at No. 27. Diddy, who finished at No. 9 in 2017, fell to No. 76.

Amber Rose Doubles Down On Wishing Bill Cosby Death And Reveals She Was Sexually Assaulted By Someone Famous In Another Instagram Rant
Opinions are split when it comes to Bill Cosby’s recent sentencing. Amber Rose was one of the first celebrities to publicly celebrate the prison sentence to which she received a lot of backlash for doing so.
The model took to Instagram to say that she hoped that the comedian would die while serving his time behind bars.
Some fans felt that Rose was taking it too far by wishing death on someone. Her post was deleted but she came back on the morning of September 30 to double down on what she said.
The mom posted a photo that read: ‘So if your momma came to you and said “this guy raped me 36 years ago’ would you be asking for proof?”
She accompanied the picture with a caption that read: “No you wouldn’t. So stfu. Everyone said ‘Awwww poor Bill Cosby, he’s gonna die in the first 2 years of his sentence’ But I said ‘I hope he serves the full 10 years then dies’ I’m wrong and wishing death on him? FOH Stand up for a Rapist if y’all want to. After someone commented that she should ‘keep the same energy with Harvey Weinstein,’ she reiterated that she feels the same way about all rapists and revealed that she was sexually assaulted by someone famous but is scared to name who it was because she doesn’t want her family to be harassed.
Amber is currently preparing for her annual Slutwalk.
