Mom says sixth-grade teacher scolded her son for saying he admired Trump in an assignment
(KOMO/CNN/Meredith) — A parent says a public school teacher in Tacoma, Washington scolded her son in class because he openly supported President Donald Trump.
Since then, the teacher says he’s been getting death threats.
It all started as a simple sixth grade class assignment at Keithly Middle School – a writing prompt that asked, “Who is one person you admire and why?”
Elsy Kusander said her son responded with President Trump.
That’s when the teacher shut down the virtual chat box and started slamming Trump in front of the class, Kusander said.
Kusander captured the end of the teacher’s rant on her phone.
The teacher, Brendan Stanton, said he didn’t believe Trump is an appropriate example for a role model. A school district spokesperson said Stanton has since received death threats over the incident.
Stanton has not been back to the classroom since the incident.
A district spokesperson said out of respect for Stanton’s safety and well-being, they cannot give information about his current work assignment or say when he will return.
“We are in conversation with the family and involved staff members, and all parties are cooperating to reach a solution,” the district ssaid in a statement.
Kusander said she holds nothing against Stanton and hopes this becomes a teachable moment.
“He admitted he was wrong, he’s going to be a better educator. I don’t want [anybody] to get fired,” Kusander said.
