Florida Woman Attacked Estranged Husband With Griddle, Choked Him And Ripped Out Bits Of His Beard As Pair Met Over Divorce Papers
A Florida woman was arrested this week after attacking her estranged husband with a kitchen pan and almost choking him out twice during an argument about their divorce, police say.
Officers responded to 90 Coconut Street after receiving a call about “suicidal threats” and found two individuals covered in blood.
A man, identified as Shawn Workman, told police he was separated from his wife and they had agreed to meet up and sort through divorce papers at about 7:15 p.m. the prior evening. The situation escalated as a verbal altercation turned physical, according to an arrest affidavit obtained via the local courts.
When officers arrived, the woman had a black eye and a mark on her left arm. The man suffered injuries to his hands and fingers, alongside marks to his neck and back. Both had dried blood on their bodies.
Deputies were informed the wife would not let the husband leave and blocked a doorway in the property. She allegedly broke a chain that was attached on his wallet. According to Shawn Workman, his former partner “choked him with her hands to the point of him almost losing consciousness at least twice.”
The man claimed after he broke free he was attacked with a griddle pan and had to hold up his hands to protect himself. He claimed the woman tackled him into a door—causing it to break at the hinges. “There was blood droppings all around the house on the floor and on the griddle,” the police affidavit noted.
The record of events said Stephanie Workman pulled out a clump of the man’s beard hair and it was later found on the kitchen floor. The man said the woman had wiped some of his blood on her own face.
According to the affidavit, the wife also claimed to have been hit with the griddle but refused to provide further details. Police said the male victim’s injuries had been “consistent with his claims of self defense.”
Stephanie Workman told the officer she got a black eye after falling into a cabinet. Paramedics attended the scene and found no underlying cuts when they wiped blood from the woman’s forehead. Police said she had been “very emotional” after the arrest and repeatedly said she did not want to get the man in trouble, but later noted the incident was partially sparked after she became “very upset” because he had cheated on her.
Inmate records posted online by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the woman was charged with false imprisonment and felony battery/domestic by strangulation, initially held at Brevard County Jail Complex on $4,000 bond. She pleaded not guilty, according to local media outlet Florida Today.
