LSU frat member arrested after hazing landed pledge on life support
A Louisiana State University fraternity brother has been arrested for his role in a hazing incident that landed a pledge on life support, school officials said.
Phi Kappa Psi member Terry Pat Reynolds II, 21, was taken into custody Monday on charges of criminal and misdemeanor hazing and of failure to seek assistance, LSU spokesman Ernie Ballard III said.
The unidentified victim was unresponsive, foaming at the mouth and had to be placed on life support when other fraternity members dropped him off at the hospital around 3 a.m. Oct. 19, news station WBRZ reported.
Hospital staff told authorities he had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.451% — nearly six times the level considered legal proof of intoxication.
Detectives said they identified Reynolds as a suspect after reviewing texts from the students who brought the victim there.
The messages showed Reynolds had invited prospective fraternity members to his off-campus home in a GroupMe message on Oct. 18.
“If you’re not doing s–t get over to my place, need a few,” the messages said, WBRZ reported.
“Hope you’re ready to get hammered if you pull up,” he added.
Police said the pledges who showed up were made to drink booze, then prevented from leaving until they finished entire bottles.
Witnesses said Reynolds also gave more bottles of alcohol to drink to those who didn’t finish theirs fast enough.
Later in the evening, Reynolds sent more texts that suggested that some of the pledges had been overserved.
“There’s at least 10 of them blackout they need rides,” he wrote, the outlet reported.
Police said Reynolds never sought medical help for any of them.
The victim has since been released from the hospital and Phi Kappa Psi fraternity was suspended last week over the incident, according to WBRZ.
“The university has stated on multiple occasions that hazing will not be tolerated and the university acts swiftly when any hazing allegations are brought forth,” Ballard said in a statement.
Reynolds was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish jail, where he was released on $13,500 bond.

Man in China beats wife to death in street while bystanders watch
Disturbing images show a man in China viciously beat his wife to death on a crowded street while bystanders look on — but do nothing to intervene.
Photos of the attack, which have gone viral since surfacing online this weekend, show the man pounding his helpless wife with a wooden stool and a rock in front of several passersby.
State media said the incident happened Saturday after the married couple accidentally struck a vehicle while driving an electric scooter in the eastern Chinese city of Shuozhou — with the man taking his anger out on his wife.
The images show cyclists, motorists and pedestrians, including children, simply watching the sidewalk attack.
“The suspect is in the custody of public security organs and the case is being fully investigated,” police told Reuters.
Photos published online by the Sun show the woman sitting on the sidewalk trying to fend off her husband’s attack, then lying down on the sidewalk while the attack continues.
“He’s not holding a machine gun,” one online commenter wrote. “Why did no one step forward to control him?”
The incident has sparked widespread outrage over China’s relaxed attitude toward domestic violence.
The Asian nation introduced a law in 2015 making domestic violence illegal, but critics say the legislation is largely ignored. At the time, the All-China Women’s Federation estimated that one in four Chinese women suffer from domestic violence during their marriages.
In 2017, China enacted a “good Samaritan” law that removed civil liability for individuals who intervene in domestic violence attacks.

New way of cooking rice removes arsenic and retains mineral nutrients, study shows
Article via Phys.org, Credit to University to Sheffield
Cooking rice in a certain way removes over 50 percent of the naturally occurring arsenic in brown rice, and 74 percent in white rice, according to new research.
A new paper, released today in Science of the Total Environment shows that cooking rice in a certain way removes over 50 percent of the naturally occurring arsenic in brown rice, and 74 percent in white rice. Importantly, this new method does not reduce micronutrients in the rice.
Following previous research from the University of Sheffield that found half of the rice consumed in the UK exceeded European Commission regulations for levels of arsenic in rice meant for the consumption for infants or young children.
This new study tested different ways to cook rice to try and reduce the arsenic content and the team from the Institute for Sustainable Food found that by using a home-friendly way of cooking rice, the “parboiling with absorption method” (PBA), most of the arsenic was removed, while keeping most nutrients in the cooked rice.
The PBA method involves parboiling the rice in pre-boiled water for five minutes before draining and refreshing the water, then cooking it on a lower heat to absorb all the water.
Arsenic, which is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, is water-soluble—so it accumulates in rice, which is grown in flooded fields more than other cereals. Arsenic exposure affects almost every organ in the body and can cause skin lesions, cancer, diabetes and lung diseases.
Rice is known to accumulate around ten times as much arsenic as other cereals. In rice grains arsenic is concentrated in the outer bran layer surrounding the endosperm. This means that brown rice, (unmilled or unpolished rice that retains its bran) contains more arsenic than white rice. This milling process removes arsenic from white rice but also removes 75-90% of its nutrients.
Dr. Manoj Menon says, “For rice consumers, this is excellent news. There are genuine concerns amongst the population about eating rice due to arsenic. Previous studies have shown that cooking rice in excess water could remove arsenic but the problem is it also removes nutrients. Our aim was to optimize the method to remove arsenic while keeping maximum nutrients in the cooked rice. Our newly developed method, PBA, is easy and home-friendly so that everyone can use it. We don’t know the amount of arsenic in each packet rice we buy; even though brown rice is nutritionally superior to white rice as our data shows, it contains more arsenic than white rice. With our new method we are able to significantly reduce the arsenic exposure while reducing the loss of key nutrients. We highly recommend this method while preparing rice for infants and children as they are highly vulnerable to arsenic exposure risks.”

Dead people caught voting in NYC, elections records show
Ballots have been mailed in to the New York City Board of Elections in the name of dead voters, The Post has learned.
Records show that the elections board received an absentee ballot from a Frances Reckhow of Staten Island, a registered Democrat.
The BOE mailed an absentee ballot requested by Frances M. Reckhow of Bedell Avenue on Sept. 24.
Reckhow supposedly mailed the ballot back on Oct. 6 and the BOE received it and declared it valid on Oct. 8, tracking records show.
But there’s a problem: Frances Reckhow, who was born on July 6, 1915 and would be 105 today, died in 2012, according to an obituary filed with The Staten Advance.
Her daughter, Carol Huben, a registered Republican according to voting records, is listed as residing at the same address as her late mother.
Huben did not return phone messages for comment. The Board of Elections said they will look into it.
An absentee ballot was also mailed from a Gertrude Nizzere, also a registered Democrat, who was born on Feb. 7, 1919 and would be 101 today.
The BOE said someone identifying as Gertrude Nizzere, with an address of Shore Road in Brooklyn, requested an absentee ballot in September..
Records show the Nizzere ballot was mailed on Oct. 9 and it was received back by the BOE on Oct.13, which declared the ballot valid on Oct. 25.
But after further review, the agency on Oct. 30 declared the Nizzere ballot received “Invalid” because a search found the voter was “Deceased,” its records show.
The Staten Island Republican Party, which is closely scrutinizing the absentee ballots, flagged the two records to The Post and is referring the matter to the police and Staten Island District Attorney Michael McMahon’s office.
A close outcome is expected between first-term Democratic Rep. Max Rose and Republican Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis for the 11th congressional seat covering Staten Island and southern Brooklyn, including Rekhow and Nizzere’s addresses.
“People should be on the alert for dead people voting. There are people using the names of dead voters to cast ballots,” said Staten Island GOP chairman Brendan Lantry.
“I believe this is just the tip of the iceberg,” said Lantry. “We’re requesting that the NYPD and the Staten Island District Attorney’s office investigate.
Republicans discovered that Nizzere died on July 4, 2016 and is buried in Calverton cemetery.
Filling out a ballot in a dead person’s name is fraud and has resulted in prosecutions elsewhere, including recently on Long Island, where a voter was accused of forging his dead mom’s name on an absentee ballot.
The Board of Elections said it was looking into the matter. The absentee ballots don’t get counted until six days after Election Day in New York.
President Trump has raised concerns about mail-in balloting, including after the city BOE was forced to resend nearly 100,000 absentee ballots to Brooklyn voters after a vendor provided the wrong return envelopes with other people’s names.

Jeannie Mai drops out of ‘Dancing with the Stars’ after hospitalization
Article via GoldDerby
Jeannie Mai has withdrawn from “Dancing with the Stars” after being hospitalized with epiglottitis.
“My doctors discovered a health concern with my throat which requires immediate attention and surgery,” Mai told “Good Morning America” in a statement on Monday (watch below). “I am heartbroken that my ‘DWTS’ journey has to end here. “I have pushed myself to new limits physically and mentally, and I am so proud of how far we’ve come.”
Epiglottitis is a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the epiglottis, a cartilage over the windpipe, becomes inflamed and causes, among other things, a blockage of air to the lungs.
Monday’s show was scheduled to be a double elimination, but due to Mai’s withdrawal, it will now feature a single elimination with performances from the remaining eight couples.
“Jeannie Mai will not be able to continue to compete on ‘DWTS’ this season due to a health concern that requires immediate attention. Jeannie has inspired us, along with millions of fans, with her energy and dedication. We wish her a full and speedy recovery,” “Dancing” said in a statement. “Since Jeannie had to withdraw from the competition, tonight’s show will feature the eight remaining couples and a single elimination.”
The “Real” host and her partner Brandon Armstrong were slated to perform a Charleston and participate in the Viennese waltz dance relay. The pair landed in the bottom two last week, but the judges saved them over “Cheer” coach Monica Aldama and Val Chermkovskiy.
“We are devastated by the news that we’re going to have to cut this season short, but Jeannie’s health does come first,” Armstrong said in a video. “Thank you to all the fans that have helped us get this far, and we are praying for a speedy recovery.”

Disney’s new skinless robot can blink like a human
Article via TheVerge
Once you get past the fact that it has no skin, the new robot from Disney Research is an impressive feat of robotics. First reported by Gizmodo, the new robot can imitate human facial movements, specifically blinking and subtle head movements.
A sensor in its chest area (covered by a shirt, because the face is unsettling enough, thanks) alerts the robot when to turn and face a person in front of it, and its eye movements shift from direct eye contact to the rapid eye movements known as saccades. It also moves slightly up and down to mimic breathing.
The robot was developed by engineers at Disney’s Research division, Walt Disney Imagineering, and robotics researchers from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and the California Institute of Technology.
While most humanoid robots generally focus their eyes on a human face and stay there, that’s not how people interact with each other (except on Zoom calls, maybe). The Disney Research team explained in its paper Realistic and Interactive Robot Gaze:
Gaze has been shown to be a key social signal, shaping perceptions of interaction partners. For example, people who make more eye contact with us are perceived to be similar to us, as well as more intelligent, conscientious, sincere, and trustworthy. Furthermore, gaze appears to also convey complex social and emotional states.
Given the importance of gaze in social interactions as well as its ability to communicate states and shape perceptions, it is apparent that gaze can function as a significant tool for an interactive robot character. Thus, the aim of this work is to develop a system to emulate human-like mutual gaze.
It’s not hard to imagine how Disney might use this technology, say, for animatronic characters at its theme parks. The company’s research division has been working on making more lifelike robots for some time; in 2018 it unveiled its Stickman robot that could do backflips in mid-air, “to approximate the height of a human stunt performer with arms raised over his or her head.”
They’ll just need to add something that looks like skin over the eye-tracking robot’s skull. Conquering the uncanny valley is one thing, but left as-is, this robot would probably freak out Disneyland guests checking out the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

Lori Loughlin Will Reportedly Serve Her Full Sentence
Lori Loughlin will serve her full two-month prison sentence for bribing college admission officials, sources close to her case told TMZ. The insiders said that the judge in Loughlin’s case wants her to serve the entire sentence, regardless of good behavior or other factors. The only thing likely to get Loughlin out early is the coronavirus pandemic.
Aunt Becky caught in college admission scandal~paid $500k to get her daughter into USC
The sources said that Loughlin entered Dublin Federal Prison in northern California on Friday, where she will be isolated from other prisoners for her first two weeks. This tactic is to prevent her from introducing any possible contagion to the prison population since COVID-19 outbreaks in detention facilities have been catastrophic this year. The conditions have even been grounds for some high-profile prisoners to be released early, including President Donald Trump‘s former lawyer Michael Cohen. That decision is reportedly left up to the Board of Prisons, not the judge who passes the sentence.
Loughlin will also not be eligible for the provisions in The First Step Act, a prison reform bill passed by Republican lawmakers and signed by Trump. It orders the Bureau of Prisons to give inmates 15 percent off of their sentence, during which time they typically transition into a halfway home or other care. However, this only applies to sentences that are a year or longer, so Loughlin’s two months will not be impacted.
If a coronavirus surge hits Dublin Federal Prison, the Bureau of Prisons will have the option of releasing her early to home confinement, but it is not guaranteed even then. The pandemic also means that Loughlin will not get visitation rights for the duration of her stay.
Loughlin is now a convicted felon, having pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud. Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, had previously rejected a plea deal when many other defendants in the same case cooperated with authorities. Both ended up pleading guilty in May. While Loughlin began her prison stay on Friday, Giannulli has yet to report for his.
Because of her felon status, Loughlin will not be able to vote in the 2020 presidential election. The actress may struggle to find work again, considering that her characters were written off When Calls the Heart and Fuller House. Her daughter, Olivia Jade, has also slowed her production of YouTube videos to a halt, indicating that the whole family may be stepping away from the spotlight.

Taylor Swift Can Legally Re-Record Her Old Albums Now
In June of last year, Scooter Braun bought the rights to Taylor Swift’s albums that were released by the label Big Machine.
After addressing the sale on her official Tumblr, Swift later revealed that she planned to re-record her first five albums when her contract allowed it — specifically, in November 2020.
After addressing the sale on her official Tumblr, Swift later revealed that she planned to re-record her first five albums when her contract allowed it — specifically, in November 2020.
Now, as of November 1, Swift is legally able to re-record her first five albums — Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, and 1989 — to potentially undercut any profits Braun would gain off the original masters.
An artist as big as Swift re-recording their catalog is practically unprecedented in pop music.
Congratulations Taylor!

Johnny Depp Convicted in the Eyes of the Public
Article via TheDailyBeast
The high court in London ruled against Johnny Depp today.
The stunning verdict, which went against most expectations, will be appealed by Depp, his legal team said, calling it “as perverse as it is bewildering.”
After examining 14 alleged episodes of abuse, the judge ruled that a 2018 story in the Sun newspaper that labeled Depp a “wife beater” was “substantially true.”
Actress Amber Heard Admits To Hitting Johnny Depp on TAPE~The Media Shows Their Hypocrisy
Depp was suing News Group Newspapers (NGN), the publishers of the British newspaper, for libel over the article that said the 57-year-old attacked his ex-wife, Amber Heard, 34, during their relationship.
During the trial, Depp denied he’d ever been violent toward his ex-wife and claimed she’d been abusive toward him during their relationship, including accusing her of putting out a cigarette in his face and throwing a vodka bottle.
However, lawyers for NGN based their defense on 14 specific allegations of abuse by Heard between 2013 and 2016. Heard was their star witness.
The case saw salacious and intimate alleged details of the private lives of Depp and Heard revealed in open court.
Among the extraordinary allegations were claims that Heard defecated in the marital bed as a “prank” on her husband, leading him to dub her “Amber Turd.”
The court heard the actor called his wife a “malicious, evil, and vindictive c—” who was “desperate for success and fame” in a series of scathing texts.
In one text, he wrote “I just cannot live like this… She is as full of shit as a Christmas Goose!!! I’m done. NO MORE…!!!”
Depp sent messages to British actor Paul Bettany, describing Heard as a witch, saying he would “fuck her burnt corpse afterwards to make sure she’s dead.” Lawyers for Depp had argued the messages should not be taken seriously “however dark and extravagant the language.”
The Sun said Depp’s claim that Heard was abusive to him could not be true as the actress weighs only eight stone (about 112 pounds) and “lacked the physical capability” to attack the actor, who she called a “hopeless addict.”
The Sun claimed Depp’s jealousy, addictions, and misogyny led to “violent explosions” that were followed by “embarrassment” and “apologies.”
The court heard details of a 2015 fight in Australia in which Depp’s finger was severed and he used the stump to scrawl messages in his own blood. The court also heard that during the couple’s honeymoon onboard the Eastern & Oriental Express in Malaysia in August 2015, Heard wrote in her diary “graphic description of Depp trying to strangle her with her own shirt.”
A spokesperson for the Sun said: “The Sun has stood up and campaigned for the victims of domestic abuse for over 20 years. Domestic abuse victims must never be silenced and we thank the Judge for his careful consideration and thank Amber Heard for her courage in giving evidence to the court.”
In his ruling, the judge, Justice Nicol, said: “The claimant [Depp] has not succeeded in his action for libel… The defendants [the Sun and News Group Newspapers] have shown that what they published in the meaning which I have held the words to bear was substantially true.
“I have reached these conclusions having examined in detail the 14 incidents on which the defendants rely as well as the overarching considerations which the claimant submitted I should take into account. In those circumstances, parliament has said that a defendant has a complete defense.”
The long-awaited decision was published online at 10 a.m. on Monday, more than three months after the high court hearing finished in late July.
The case was arguably the biggest English libel trial of the 21st century and became the subject of global attention as it unfolded over three weeks in July at the Royal Courts of Justice in London.
Spending 20 hours in the witness box over five days, Depp faced intense questioning about his Hollywood lifestyle, his use of drink and drugs, allegations of violence, and his friendships and associations.
Depp admitted to prodigious drink and drug use during the case. He admitted to spending $30,000 on red wine each month and said he used large amounts of cocaine, which he said merely “brought him to a normal level.” Depp lost a staggering $650 million he made at the height of his Pirates of the Caribbean fame and was left owing $100 million in taxes. Heard was accused of having an affair with Tesla billionaire Elon Musk, which she denied. Depp is said to have threatened to cut Musk’s penis off.
Sasha Wass, a lawyer for NGN, told the court there was “no doubt that Mr. Depp regularly and systematically abused his wife,” adding: “The characterization that he is a wife beater is entirely truthful.”
Depp is likely to be made to cover the bulk of the Sun’s legal costs, plus his own.
Depp will now have to decide whether to continue with a separate claim against Heard in the U.S. where he is suing her for $50 million over a column she wrote.
