Shocking video captures cop body-slamming woman in handcuffs
Shocking video has emerged of a Canadian cop body-slamming a woman in a judo-like move that sent her face-first onto the floor at a Calgary police station — and landing the officer in court on an assault charge, according to reports.
The footage released in court this week shows Constable Alex Dunn escorting the suspect, Dalia Kafi, to have her mug shot taken in December 2017, Global News reported.
She is seen standing against a wall with her hands cuffed behind her back as Dunn tries to remove her scarf, prompting her to move away as she tries to prevent him from pulling it off.
Suddenly, the officer whips the suspect onto the floor before another cop arrives and lifts her up. Blood is clearly seen at the spot where she hit her head. Kafi, who was 26 at the time, suffered a broken nose, which required surgery, and a split lip, which needed stitches.
Dunn was suspended with pay after being charged in 2019 with assault causing bodily harm — but has since returned to work in an administrative role, according to the report.
“Due to court delays related to COVID-19, Const. Dunn’s duty status was revisited and updated such that he returned to work restricted to non-operational functions while awaiting disposition on this charge,” police told Global News in a statement.
The 34-year-old officer testified this week that Kafi had slipped out of her handcuffs and that he didn’t mean to slam her onto the floor, CBC News reported.
“Her hand had come up and wrapped around my hand,” he said. “I immediately said to her, and excuse my language, your honor, ‘What the f—, you’re supposed to be in handcuffs.’”
The handcuff on her right hand had actually slid up toward her elbow so even though her arms were attached to each other, Dunn testified that she managed to reach up to her left shoulder and grab his hand.
He said he felt the need to do a “dynamic takedown” on her to regain control, fearing she could use the cuffs as a “swinging hook weapon.”
Dunn had arrested Kafi for breaching a court-imposed curfew and obstruction of justice after she allegedly provided a fake name when the vehicle she’d been traveling in was pulled over by police.
The officer’s testimony “does not reconcile with reality,” prosecutor Ryan Pollard argue in court, according to CBC News.
Dunn’s account of what happened “defies physics, it defies anatomy, it does not reconcile with reality,” he said.
“There is no contortion or movement that would even begin to allow for that possibility,” he added. “None of this happened, it couldn’t have happened.”
Pollard told the judge that one witness, a senior officer with 30 years’ policing experience, said he saw no reason for the cop’s “judo-style throw.”
