Florida professor under investigation over ‘black privilege’ tweets
A Florida professor who cited “black privilege” among several controversial posts about race amid the national protests over George Floyd’s death is being investigated over the messages, school officials said.
Recent tweets on the personal account of Charles Negy — a University of Central Florida associate psychology professor and author of “White Shaming: Bullying Based on Prejudice, Virtue-Signaling and Ignorance” — were being evaluated by school officials Thursday after students and alumni called for his ouster.
“Being actively anti-racist means calling out and confronting racist comments,” UCF said in a statement Thursday. “We are aware of Charles Negy’s recent personal Twitter posts, which are completely counter to UCF’s values.”
Officials at the public university in Orlando were reviewing the matter while “being mindful of the First Amendment,” the statement continued.
In separate tweets Wednesday, Negy cited “black privilege” in one, while directly comparing African Americans and Asian Americans in another.
“Black privilege is real: Besides affirm. action, special scholarships and other set asides, being shielded from legitimate criticism is a privilege,” Negy tweeted. “But as a group, they’re missing out on much needed feedback.”
In another, Negy tweeted: “Sincere question: If Afr. Americans as a group, had the same behavioral profile as Asian Americans (on average, performing the best academically, having the highest income, committing the lowest crime, etc.), would we still be proclaiming ‘systemic racism’ exists?”
The professor’s tweets were protected as of Thursday afternoon, meaning users had to request access from him to view his posts.
Negy, meanwhile, acknowledged Thursday that his views are controversial, but insisted he’s protected by the First Amendment, the Orlando Sentinel reports.
“That’s the potential beauty of it,” he wrote the newspaper in an email.
Negy joined UCF in 1998 after earning his doctorate from Texas A&M University, according to his university webpage. He told the Sentinel he was unsure if UCF launched a formal investigation into his posts, although he insisted he wasn’t worried about its possible outcome.
“[Administrators know] that despite how unpopular some of my views are with some folks, they must actively protect the U.S. Constitution’s free speech,” Negy told the newspaper.
In addition to people calling for Negy’s firing with a #UCFfirehim hashtag on Twitter, more than 2,800 people have signed an online petition for him to be let go as of Thursday.

Woman charged with burglary during looting in South Carolina
A South Carolina woman is facing charges for looting from two businesses when a peaceful demonstration turned riotous in Charleston, police said.
Emma Waters, 19, was arrested Wednesday in connection with burglaries at a clothing shop and a grocery store Saturday, police said.
Surveillance video showed people breaking into front windows at Las Olas before merchandise was stolen from a display at the clothing store, according to a police report obtained by WCSC.
A woman was seen climbing through the window before unlocking a door and letting several other looters inside to rip merchandise from shelves, police said.
Damage to the store and the value of stolen clothing totaled $25,000, police said.
An employee at Las Olas posted a surveillance on its Instagram page, saying a woman believed to be Waters let in other looters during the protests, WCIV reports.
The owner told police she was also spotted stealing merchandise herself, according to the station.
Waters is also facing charges for a burglary at King Street Grocery, where a manager told police $100,000 of food and other items was stolen, as well as a cash register and money, WCSC reports.
Waters, who has been charged with two counts of second-degree violent burglary, remained held without bail early Thursday at a jail in Charleston County, records show.
Charleston police said in a statement Sunday no injuries were reported during Saturday’s “peaceful demonstration” that turned violent without warning. Some of the “criminal behavior” appeared to be spontaneous, while other acts were coordinated, police said.
At least seven people were arrested on charges of loitering, burglary and damage to private property, police said.
“We will act decisively and swiftly to those participating in this type of behavior in our city,” Charleston Police Chief Luther Reynolds said in a statement.

Detroit popcorn company sold after owner’s controversial George Floyd comments
The owner of a well-known popcorn maker in Michigan has been forced to sell back his business following a social media firestorm over his comments that appeared to support police brutality, according to reports.
Evan Singer is “no longer affiliated with or employed” by the Detroit Popcorn Company following a since-deleted comment posted on a Facebook profile under the pseudonym Even Sangria, the Detroit Press reports.
“They wonder why they need knee’s in there necks,” the comment read.
The company’s former owner, David Farber, is now taking back the reins after selling it to Singer some 18 months ago, the newspaper reports.
“I was very disheartened and disappointed in what Mr. Singer wrote on Facebook,” Farber said in a news release. “I don’t tolerate racism in any form, ever … Mr. Singer disrespected our community, customers, and employees.”
Farber said the comment — which led to boycott calls and lost accounts — prompted him to “buy back” the company, which remains closed as a sale of the 97-year-old business is in the works.
The Detroit Zoo and Quicken Loans also ended their relationships with the firm after Singer’s post, the Free Press reports.
The company’s website bills itself as Michigan’s top provider of popcorn, as well as concession equipment and related supplies.
Farber, who originally bought the company in 2006 and revamped the business, said Singer was not in default and he is now pursuing a sale to black investors, he told the newspaper.
“It’s my name, it’s a company I built,” Farber said. “What he said, you can’t say that, ever.”
The Facebook account named “Even Sangria” was linked to Singer, the Detroit News reports.
Singer, for his part, acknowledged making the comment during an interview with WJBK.
“I said something that I shouldn’t have and I regret saying that now, but it had nothing to do with race,” Singer told the station.
Singer said his remarks were in response to video of a Target being destroyed and not connected to the May 25 of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis, which sparked protests against police brutality nationwide.
“And as a business owner, it was extremely upsetting to see that,” Singer said. “My wife and family is being threatened over Facebook over a post that someone saw that had nothing to [do] what they’re even making it out to be.”

Thieves looting TVs from moving train captured in wild video
A jaw-dropping video appears to show a crowd of thieves looting TVs from a moving train near Chicago on Sunday as protests over the death of George Floyd rage.
The footage, posted on YouTube Tuesday, shows dozens of people climbing aboard the snail-paced cargo train and raiding boxes of big screen TVs. Some of the crooks then hop off the train and flee.
“The train is moving. The train is moving bro, look … These folks are stealing,” a man shooting the footage can be heard saying.
Titled “Protesters Loot TVs Off Moving Train In Chicago,” the video has also been posted on Twitter under the hashtags #chicagoprotest and #georgefloyd.
A rep for Union Pacific said that train was burglarized outside of its rail yard off Western Avenue in Chicago.
“We believe the burglary was instigated by people familiar with the area and the movement of our trains; however, once it was discovered TVs were inside the containers others joined in,” the rep said.
“Due to Cook County’s orders related to the COVID-19 pandemic, no arrests were made.”

Family of six found dead in their SUV in apparent mass suicide
A San Antonio family and their two cats were found dead in an SUV parked in their garage Thursday, local police said.
The bodies of the husband and wife and their four young children — ages 11 months to 4 years — were discovered in the vehicle along with their cats in a basket as police conducted a welfare check at the residence.
Authorities arrived at the home around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, finding a note on the front door with military jargon and a cryptic message, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said.
An officer interpreted the note to read “bodies or people inside of the home, animals were in the freezer, and do not enter,” according to McManus.
Police entered the home to a strong noxious odor that was later identified as carbon monoxide, but officers, fearing explosives were inside, backed off and called EMS. Police used a robot to sweep the residence before clearing it of explosives and entering the garage to find the grisly scene.
“There’s no words can describe it,” McManus said of making the discovery.
The husband and wife were both in their 30s and they were a “military family,” McManus said. They had moved into the home in the Stone Oak neighborhood in January, though neighbors told police they “never saw them” out and about, according to McManus.
Police were still investigating a motive Thursday night and the identities of the family had not been revealed.
Cops were first alerted that something was off by the husband’s employer. He had been working from home and was required to call into work every morning.
He had called on Wednesday, but not on Thursday, and after repeated attempts to reach him, the employer alerted police, McManus said.
“So it happened sometime overnight, I’m guessing, based on the timeframe of everything,” he said.
McManus said authorities will be hunting through the residence for clues into the night.
“This is just the very beginning of the investigation,” McManus said. “Although it appears to be a suicide, there’ll be a lot of combing through the house to find any evidence they can of what happened in greater detail.”

A Black Trans Woman Named Iyanna Dior Was Beaten by a Mob In Minneapolis
Viral footage of the brutal beating of a black transgender woman named Iyanna Dior on Monday has enraged activists, prompting nationwide calls for justice and awareness of the high rates of violence against black transgender women.
Dior, 21, was attacked by a mob in a Minneapolis gas station, reportedly after a fender bender. The city has been wracked by protests following the violent death of George Floyd in police custody last week. Footage of the attack, which Rolling Stone is not posting, has also been circulating on Twitter.
In a post on her Facebook, Dior said she needed time “to process everything that’s going on.” “Thanks to everyone reaching out making sure I’m OK, Imma talk real soon,” she wrote. She also posted her CashApp handle #NajaBabiie for those interested in supporting her.
The beating of Dior comes on the tail end of the fatal police shooting of Tony McDade, a 38-year-old black trans man in Tallahassee, Florida, which has sparked protests among the LGBTQ community. Activists have also brought attention to the murder of Nina Pop, 28, who was found dead in her apartment in Missouri early last month. Both McDade and Pop were initially misgendered by police departments when they released information about their deaths.
LGBTQ activists are sharing Dior’s story on social media as part of an effort to bring awareness to the increased rate of violence against black transgender people. According to the Human Rights Campaign, at least 26 transgender or gender non-conforming people were violently killed in 2019 alone, with the vast majority of the victims being black transgender women.
“This violence has got to stop. All of our hearts should hurt watching the videos of this young trans woman being hit by a group of people. Black lives matter and that includes trans, non-binary, queer, cis and straight Black lives,” Tori Cooper, director of community engagement for HRC’s Transgender Justice Initiative, tells Rolling Stone. “The time is now for us to make changes through an intersectional lens that includes all Black lives.”
Janet Mock also posted an impassioned message of support for Dior on Instagram, urging supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement to fight for the lives of black transgender women. “We must stop centering cisgender heterosexual men and their needs. We will not ignore the violence some of these men enact on you, our sisters’ and our siblings’ lives. If Black lives matter then Black trans lives should matter as well. We are here. We been here,” she wrote.

Woman rolls down Lexus window to pepper spray teen protester
A Southern California woman was busted after video showed her rolling down her car window to fire pepper spray on a George Floyd protester, according to reports.
Amy Atkisson, 46, of Thousand Oaks, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of unlawful use of tear gas for attacking a 16-year-old girl, news station KCBS reported.
Footage posted to Twitter shows Atkisson stopped at a light Sunday as protesters chant, “Black lives matter” on the side of Hillcrest Drive and Lynn Road.
She rolled down the window of her Lexus SUV and blasted pepper spray at one of them, video showed.
“This is not right, we should not attack each other!” wrote a Twitter user who shared the video.
Police were able to track Atkisson down from the license plates captured in the video of the heated exchange, the Ventura County Star reported.
“It took a little time to track down the victim and interview her, and obviously we were getting a lot of people contacting dispatch who were present or saw the video,” Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. Denise Sliva told the newspaper.
Atkisson was released from custody Wednesday on no bail and is set to return to court July 31, the outlets reported.

Hundreds of ‘looters’ to be cut loose without bail
More than 400 people were awaiting arraignment in Manhattan criminal court Tuesday afternoon for allegedly looting stores Monday night — and most will likely be cut loose without bail because of the state law passed earlier this year, a court spokesperson said.
By 4 p.m., a majority of the 400 people arrested were awaiting arraignment and most will be hit with a felony burglary charge for which bail cannot be set, meaning they will be released, New York State Court spokesperson Lucian Chalfen said in an email.
Chalfen added Manhattan criminal court was operating two arraignment parts Tuesday afternoon and night to process the paperwork of the hundreds arrested.
In an interview with The Post earlier Tuesday, NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan lamented that most of the looters arrested Monday night and early Tuesday morning would be “back out.”
“But when it comes to a burglary, which is a commercial store, which is looting, they’re back out,” he said.
“Because of bail reform, you’re back out on the street the next day. You cannot be held on any sort of bail. I spoke to (Manhattan District Attorney) Cy Vance about that. He told me there was nothing he could do,” he added.
Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said at a press conference Tuesday morning that about 700 people were arrested during widespread looting in Manhattan and the Bronx.
In the chaos, looters ransacked dozens of stores in Midtown Manhattan, including Macy’s flagship shop at Herald Square.

Naked man pummeled after charging pedestrians in the Bronx
Startling video from Monday shows a naked man attacking bystanders in the Bronx, and then getting pummeled to the pavement.
The graphic footage shows the 28-year-old naked man, wearing only a pair of white socks, streaking across East Fordham Road near Morris Avenue at 3:30 p.m. and charging a man in a face mask.
The two exchange punches on the Fordham Heights sidewalk before other bystanders jump into the fray, as horrified witnesses scream, “No, no, no, no!”
At one point, the man is thrown to the pavement and beaten and kicked by three other men, including one who appears to attempt to restrain him — but he gets back up and continues going after the group.
One man body-slams the streaker into a car on East Fordham Road but he remains undeterred, skulking around the sidewalk as the footage ends.
An NYPD spokeswoman initially told The Post that the video — which has gone viral on Twitter with more than 43,000 views — was old but then clarified to confirm the incident happened on Monday.
Police received a 911 call for an emotionally disturbed person and transported the man to St. Barnabas Hospital for evaluation.
