Burger King says it never promised Impossible Whoppers were vegan
Burger King, saying it never billed its “Impossible Whoppers” as vegan or promised to cook them a particular way, said a proposed class action by a vegan customer over the plant-based patties being cooked on the same grills as meat burgers should be thrown out.
In a court filing on Thursday, Burger King said plaintiff Phillip Williams should have asked how Impossible Whoppers were cooked before ordering one that he said was “coated in meat by-products” at an Atlanta drive-through.
Burger King said reasonable customers would ask about its cooking methods, and Williams would have known he could request an alternative method had he done even “the smallest amount of investigation” on its website or by reading media reports.
Williams “assumed that an Impossible Whopper would satisfy his own particularly strict form of veganism … solely because he asked a Burger King restaurant employee to ‘hold the mayo,'” Burger King said. “This claim has no basis.”
Lawyers for Williams did not respond on Friday to requests for comment.
Williams claimed in his Nov. 18 lawsuit in Miami federal court that Burger King “duped” him into buying the Impossible Whopper at a premium price and is seeking damages on behalf of all U.S. consumers who bought it.
Burger King is a unit of Toronto-based Restaurant Brands International Inc <QSR.TO>, which also owns the Canadian coffee and restaurant chain Tim Hortons and is overseen by Brazilian private equity firm 3G Capital.
Impossible Foods Inc, which helped create the Impossible Whopper, has said it was designed for meat eaters who want to consume less animal protein, not for vegans or vegetarians.
Burger King advertises the Impossible Whopper on its website at $4, down from its original suggested price of $5.59, and in mid-January added it to its two-for-$6 menu. In a statement, a spokesman said the product “continues to exceed expectations.”
The case is Williams v Burger King Corp, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Florida, No. 19-24755.

Eminem honors 50 Cent at Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony
Eminem honored 50 Cent during 50’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. The rapper-actor’s star was added to the landmark on Thursday.
“Of all the things I don’t remember about 2002, I have a very clear memory of the first time I met 50,” Eminem said during his speech. “One of the first things I noticed when he walked into the room was his presence. It just kind of felt like he’s going to be a star … He was the whole package.”
Eminem went on to discuss 50 Cent’s music. “And what’s crazy about it to me is the charisma and the personality, everything matched the intensity of his music.” He called 50 Cent’s first album “so classic,” and mentioned 50’s prolific output of mixtapes and how he and Dr. Dre walked away from the meeting impressed. “If it worked on us, it was going to work on the rest of the world and I’m glad we trusted our instincts.”
“I’m here today because he’s not only a business partner to me, this is one of the best friends I’ve known in the world,” he continued. “I would say it’s much more fun to be his friend than it is to be his enemy, ’cause this guy is f–king relentless. And he won’t stop.”
The Detroit rapper noted many of 50 Cent’s accomplishments – artist, entrepreneur, actor, director, producer — as well as recognized their friendship. “He pretty much does it all. And he’s also helped me through a lot of hard times in my own life and he’s always been there when I need him. So, 50, congrats on your star, man. Hollywood is making it official what I knew from the beginning and Dre knew from the beginning.”
50 Cent, in turn, thanked both Eminem and Dr. Dre, who was also in attendance, during his speech. “I don’t honestly think my career would’ve been what it was without their support. Dre’s a mentor for the whole squad, really, because he’s been doing it for long before that and was able to guide us in ways without even knowing that he’s doing it.”
50 Cent’s “Power” will air the last episode of its sixth and final season on Sunday. The 50 Cent-executive produced ABC drama “For Life” will premiere on February 11th.

Terry Crews Apologizes to Gabrielle Union for Defending ‘America’s Got Talent’
Terry Crews has issued a public apology to Gabrielle Union over comments he made regarding the former “America’s Got Talent” judge’s exit from the reality competition series.
“I told @KevinHart4real a while ago, he needed 2 “acknowledge the pain of other people.” Right now I have to do the same thing. I want to apologize for the comments I made. I realize there are a lot of Black women hurt and let down by what I said and also by what I didn’t say,” Crews tweeted Friday.
“I hear you, I respect you and understand you. I am sorry and I am here to support you. I spoke from my own personal point of view without first taking into consideration someone else’s experience,” he continued. “I allowed disrespectful comments directed at me and my family to cause me to react angrily instead of responding thoughtfully. This certainly caused more harm, and it is my hope that I can amend any pain I have caused to those who were hurt by my words.”
The “AGT” host went on to address Union directly.
“@itsgabrielleu, I want you to know it was never my intention to invalidate your experience– but that is what I did. I apologize. You have been through a lot in this business, and with that I empathize with the struggle toward fairness and equality in the workplace,” he continued.
Crews was interrupted by “The 3rd Hour of Today” hosts and asked if he had spoken to Union amid the controversy to which he responded, “I have not. I haven’t reached out, but I haven’t heard anything.”
He then said that his wife told him, “Well if she hasn’t made a statement, why would you?”
You can watch the original video of Crews’ comments here.
It was announced on Nov. 22 that Union, along with fellow “AGT” judge Julianne Hough, would not be returning for next year’s Season 15. Union’s contract was not renewed following several behind-the-scenes incidents and what showrunners described as “difficult” behavior, Vulture reported.
