If You Bought a Smart TV on Black Friday, the FBI has a Warning for You
Your brand-new smart TV might have all the latest technology, but it’s still vulnerable to hackers.
It’s hard to imagine that simply doing something that hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people did over this weekend would be worthy of a warning from the FBI, but if you bought a smart TV you might want to read on. The FBI says your new TV might be the thing hackers use to break into your home. Yes, that FBI.
As if there weren’t already enough online threats to worry about, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is trying to ruin your excitement over the amazing deal you got on that brand new 65″ 4K television destined for the wall in your living room. Talk about a buzzkill. Can it really be that bad?
Yes it can. As the FBI warns:
“Beyond the risk that your TV manufacturer and app developers may be listening and watching you, that television can also be a gateway for hackers to come into your home. A bad cyber actor may not be able to access your locked-down computer directly, but it is possible that your unsecured TV can give him or her an easy way in the backdoor through your router.”
Most of us, if we’re paying attention, at least try to practice good cyber-hygiene when it comes to our laptops or smartphones. We turn on features like FaceID or TouchID. We activate two-factor authentication for important online accounts. We don’t share passwords.
Wait, you share your passwords? Be careful, Netflix isn’t cool with that anymore.
But I digress.
None of those best practices exist on a smart TV. Even though they are connected to the internet, and many are equipped with cameras and microphones, they’re remarkably un-secure. That means many of us just added a camera and microphone to our living rooms–or even worse, bedrooms–many of which can be hacked with very little effort.
Look, the reality is that your Smart TV is probably not the most likely target of a hacker. In fact, even the FBI admits that attacks like this are rare. Then again, it’s reasonable to wonder whether most of us would even know if our TV microphone was hacked.
There’s a general rule that applies here. Actually, I have no idea if it’s really a rule, but it’s certainly something worth thinking about: The more technology improves your life, and the more you come to depend on it, the greater the potential it has to cause you harm.
The FBI suggests regularly updating the security software on your TV, but if you’re worried, there’s always MacGyver’s favorite solution–black tape over the camera (which is actually the FBI’s recommendation).
I have a better idea–save yourself the money and just buy one without a microphone and camera. Who really needs those in a TV anyway? Considering every laptop, smartphone, and smart home device already has one or both, do you really need another in your TV? Or, even better, just skip the Smart TV and buy one without an internet connection. That might be the smartest solution of all.

Woman Slashes Shopper’s Neck With Box Cutter at San Diego Walgreens
A woman armed with a box cutter slashed the neck of a shopper at a Walgreens in San Diego on Saturday, leaving the victim with a life-threatening injury, police said.
The attack occurred about 9:15 a.m. as the victim was browsing the cosmetics aisle at the drugstore on Camino Ruiz north of Mira Mesa Boulevard, said San Diego police Officer Tony Martinez.
The alleged assailant, a 55-year-old woman, first threatened to hurt the victim, Martinez said. She then grabbed the customer by her hair, pulled her head back and sliced her neck, he said.
Employees and customers inside the store witnessed the attack and disarmed the assailant, detaining her for officers. The woman was arrested on an attempted murder charge. Her name was not immediately released.

Woman Stabs 2 in Head and Face With Scissors, Attacks 3rd Victim at Fontana-Area Church
A woman who was cleaning a Fontana area church stabbed two people who tried to stop her after she started attacking another woman Friday, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.
Destinee Watson, 23, was at the kitchen area of Pentecostal Church of God in Bloomington when she felt “disrespected by one of the church employees,” grabbed a woman and started repeatedly punching her in the head, authorities said Monday.
A person then ran in and tried to get Watson off the woman.
Watson let go of the first victim and allegedly punched the person who came to help. She pulled her second victim to the ground and started repeatedly stabbing her in the head with a pair of scissors, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Another person then approached and pulled Watson away from the victim. Watson then stabbed that person in the face, according to officials.
The third victim managed to run to safety and wait for deputies to arrive.
Deputies detained Watson without incident and arrested her on suspicion of attempted murder, authorities said.
The conditions of the three victims were unknown Monday.

Tied-up Toddler With Plastic Bag Over His Head Rescued From Burning Santa Paula Home; Mom Arrested
A woman was arrested after allegedly putting a plastic bag over her 3-year-old son’s head and tying him up as their Santa Paula home burned over the weekend, police said Monday.
Firefighters initially found the woman tied to a bed when they responded to a structure fire at a home on Bahia Circle about 6:10 p.m. Sunday, according to the Santa Paula Police Department.
While extinguishing the blaze in the downstairs living room, crews discovered the toddler alone in another bedroom. The boy had a plastic bag over his head and his hands were bound, a police news release stated.
Firefighters rescued the mother and child, and transported both to a local hospital where they received treatment for smoke inhalation.
After the blaze was put out, detectives and arson investigators were dispatched to the scene.
Police interviewed the woman, 47-year-old Maricela Magana Ruiz, and then arrested her. They determined Ruiz had placed the bag over the child’s head and tied his hands before situating him in the bedroom by himself, according to the release.
She was booked on suspicion of felony child endangerment and is being held at the Ventura County Jail on $50,000 bail.
A motive was not immediately known. Investigators are also trying to determine if the blaze was intentionally set.
Police have not released any additional information.

Wisconsin student shot by officer after allegedly bringing gun to school
WAUKESHA, Wis. — A Wisconsin high school is “safe and secure” after a student was shot by an officer for pointing a gun at law enforcement, police say.
Authorities said that a student at Waukesha South High School notified administrators after hearing that a student was in possession of a handgun at school.
“The school’s Resource Officer immediately responded to the classroom, the SRO made efforts to secure the classroom by getting the other students to safety,” said Waukesha Police Chief Russell Jack.
Other officers responded to the classroom and began talking with the suspect in an attempt to deescalate the situation. The 17-year-old student would not remove his hands from his pocket and continued to ignore officer’s commands, authorities said.
Eventually, police say the officer was forced to fire at the student when he would not remove his hands from his pocket.
“This is an isolated incident. We are not seeking anybody else we have no other persons of interest. We are in the investigative stage right now as the scene is stabilized,” police said on Twitter.
The student was taken to a local hospital with injuries, according to the Waukesha Police Department.
Students were dismissed for the day at 11:15 a.m., according to a statement from the school’s principal.
A 9th-grader at the school said he and his friends “thought it was just a drill.”
“We thought it was just a drill at the beginning,” the student said. “We were in there for like a whole hour.”
An emotional mother described the moment she saw her son safe “like giving birth all over again.”

14-year-old boy accused of shooting sister, killing her boyfriend
KATY, Texas (AP) — Authorities say a 14-year-old boy shot and wounded his older sister and killed her boyfriend during “a house party gone bad” in a Houston suburb.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez says on Twitter that the boy shot his 18-year-old sister and her 20-year-old boyfriend with a shotgun at a home in Katy around 11:40 p.m. Saturday.
Gonzalez says there had been a “disturbance” between the boy and his sister’s boyfriend, and that there were about 10 young adults in the home at the time.
He says the 14-year-old was detained but isn’t in custody. Investigators will refer their findings to a juvenile prosecutor.
The sister is in stable condition at a hospital. Her boyfriend was declared dead at the scene.
The sheriff’s department hasn’t responded to requests for comment Sunday.

McDonald’s is testing a new chicken sandwich
After months of being bested in the Chicken Sandwich Wars, McDonald’s is testing a new weapon.
On Monday, McDonald’s kicked off a test of its new crispy chicken sandwich and deluxe crispy chicken sandwich in Houston, Texas, and Knoxville, Tennessee.
The crispy chicken sandwich has a fried chicken filet topped with butter and pickles, while the deluxe version also includes tomatoes, lettuce, and mayo.
Both sandwiches use a new chicken filet that has not been served at McDonald’s, differentiating them from the McChicken and the buttermilk crispy chicken sandwich. And the new sandwiches appear to be served in a foil bag, a presentation that Chick-fil-A and Popeyes use but McDonald’s has not.
McDonald’s has been working to perfect a new chicken sandwich for months, even before Popeyes launched its own earlier this year.
CNBC reported in July that McDonald’s franchisees were pushing the company to make the development of a new chicken sandwich its “top priority,” citing Chick-fil-A’s results. A sandwich that McDonald’s tested earlier this year apparently underwhelmed restaurant operators, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The launch of Popeyes’ chicken sandwich highlighted McDonald’s need for a superior chicken sandwich. The fast-food giant reported in October that it lost part of its share in the chicken category during the so-called Chicken Sandwich Wars.
McDonald’s is also planning to roll out chicken at breakfast in 2020, according to leaked documents viewed by Business Insider, though the company has not announced what the new menu item — or items — will be.

Lil Wayne Almost Got Arrested In Saudi Arabia After Because of Drugs
Lil Wayne was inches away from getting arrested in Saudi Arabia and now he vows to never go back to the Diriyah Music Festival.
Lil Wayne got into some hot water while in Saudi Arabia recently, and he has now put the country on blast. The “Sucker for Pain” rapper ventured to the Middle East state this past weekend to take part in the Diriyah Music Festival in the capital of Riyadh. The Kingdom has become a hot place for artists to perform recently, with 50 Cent, Chris Brown, Janet Jackson, Tyga, and Future, all showing Saudi love over the last few months. The “Rack City” rapper and “First Off” artist both returned for the Diriyah festival.
Although the show went well on Saturday, with loads of fans showing how pleased they were about Wayne gracing their presence, the mutual love stopped short when the 37-year-old took to Twitter to lay into the Saudi capital. “Never going to Riyadh again!!!” Weezy declared online.
While he did not elaborate on the reasons behind his chance of heart, reports claim that it may have been drug-related.
Saudi Arabia is a super conservative Muslim country with tons of things being prohibited. Tourists are not allowed to wear shorts, take drugs, or even dab as the dance move was outlawed by the government in 2017, and a local woman was charged for performing the move this past October.
Speculations are that Wayne narrowly escaped being locked up himself for personal drug use — a huge no-no in the Gulf state — with Saudi officials even calling him out on Twitter (because apparently that’s still allowed).
They alleged that Weezy had been informed about the strict narcotics laws but chose to ignore them. And because he’s a thug like that, the Grammy award winner posted a photo of himself smoking a joint with the caption, “IT’S THAT GKUA Ultra Premium @gkuaofficial #thatgkua #myweed.”
Lil Wayne has since deleted the tweet.
