Man kills eight elementary school children in China on first day of class
Eight young children were killed in a school attack in the central Chinese province of Hubei on Monday. It was their first day of class.
The attack took place at the Chaoyangpo Elementary School in Hubei’s Enshi City. According to a statement from the local government, a 40-year-old man surnamed Yu attacked students at the school at 8 a.m. local time, when students would have been arriving for class.
He is in police custody.
Eight were killed and another two were injured. No details were given on the students’ injuries or their individual ages. In China, elementary school children range in age from 6 years old to 13.
“The local party committee and government is all out organizing rescue and remedial work,” the statement from Enshi City government said.
A separate statement by the Enshi City police was originally posted on Chinese social media site Weibo but was later removed without explanation. The hashtag “school criminal case in Hubei” had gained 120 million views on Weibo as of Tuesday morning.
Attacks on schoolchildren in China have happened before. In October, at least 14 children at a kindergarten in Chongqing were slashed by a woman with a kitchen knife.
In April 2018, nine students were killed and others injured after a male suspect began attacking students in Shaanxi province.
September 2 marked the start of a new school semester in China after the summer break.
According to state-run tabloid Global Times, the local government is providing psychological counseling services to the students who witnessed or were injured in Monday’s attack.

Newborn, five hours old, found abandoned on front porch
Atlanta, GA (WGCL ) — Atlanta Police are looking for the birth parents of a newborn baby who was found abandoned on the front porch of a home in Northwest Atlanta around 1 a.m. Tuesday.
Frieda Burston tells CBS46 she was sleep and woke up to get a glass of water when she heard a baby crying outside her home.
“I kept hearing it,” Burston said. “It got louder and louder. I came to this window. There was nobody there and I opened up the door and the baby was screaming and it was in a baby’s cloth,” she described.
She says she picked up the infant girl and took the baby inside her home to call 9-1-1. Medics said the baby was no more than 5 hours old.
“They hadn’t even took the cord off the baby. So when the officers and police when I called them, they cut the umbilical cord in my house,” Burston explained.
Tuesday afternoon, Atlanta Police investigators went door-to-door on Mary George Avenue NW asking residents if they knew anything about the baby or possibly her mother.
Carole Williams said she heard about the child on the news. She cried as she told CBS46’s Hayley Mason that she will be praying for the child.
“That baby did not ask to be in this world,” Williams said. “I am glad the baby’s safe. I pray for the mother. But it’s all about the child,” she went on.
Georgia’s Safe Haven laws make it legal to leave a newborn at a fire station, police station or hospital with an employee. Those laws were not followed here and police say they could press charges when they find out who abandoned the child.
“You cannot leave a child unattended at any age, but certainly not an infant on a porch at someone’s house,” said Investigator James White. “There are manners in that this has to be handled. You have to contact a place of safely, A police department, the fire department, DFCAS, the hospital. These are all appropriate places that maybe the child should’ve been taken to rather than just driving up to someone’s house and leaving her there,” he said.
The Department of Family and Children’s Services says it will be searching for potential foster parents as police search for the infant’s birth parents. If birth parents are not found, the child could be eligible for adoption.
Anyone with information on the child or the mother is asked to call Atlanta Police Crimestopper at 404-577-TIPS

Customers Storm Popeyes With Gun After Being Told There Were No More Chicken Sandwiches, Leave Baby In Car
A man allegedly pulled a gun on employees of a Popeyes store yesterday because the chain had sold out of chicken sandwiches.
The suspect was allegedly with a group of people who are accused of flying into a collective rage and trying to storm the Houston-based restaurant shortly before 9 p.m. on Monday.
According to local media outlet KTRK, the mob of assailants, consisting of three men and two women, had initially visited the drive-thru in a black SUV. But after being informed of the lack of chicken sandwiches, they attempted to force their way into the restaurant and one man pulled a firearm. A member of staff was able to lock the group outside the premises.
A baby was reportedly in the vehicle at the time of the altercation, which occurred at a store on Scott Street. ABC 7 reported the baby remained inside the vehicle throughout the incident.
No-one was injured and police are working to identify the suspects. Much to the delight of social media, police confirmed the incident on Twitter, writing: “Southeast officers are at 7100 Scott. Male pulled a gun on employees of restaurant after they ran out of chicken sandwich.” The short post quickly went semi-viral, attracting more than 2,500 shares and over 3,000 likes.
Since it launched on August 12, the Popeyes chicken sandwich has been in hot demand. Its creation led to a war-of-words between rival brands, including Chick-fil-A and Wendy’s.
Public demand quickly outweighed supply, and Popeyes announced it had totally sold out of the chicken sandwich roughly two weeks later, on August 27. Only one day later, the brand’s account tweeted: “We hear y’all. We’re working to get The Sandwich back as soon as possible.”
In a statement describing the shortfall released last month, a spokesperson tried to calm the social media storm, writing: “The demand for the new Chicken Sandwich in the first few weeks following launch far exceeded our very optimistic expectations. Popeyes aggressively forecasted demand through the end of September and has already sold through that inventory.”
That explanation was not enough for some customers.
Last month, a citizen of one Tennessee city decided to sue Popeyes for running out of the sought-after food item. Craig Barr, of Chattanooga, accused the chain of deceptive business practices, false advertising and causing him humiliation.
According to local media, Barr alleged that he had been scammed out of $25 by a man on the internet who claimed he could obtain a chicken sandwich from a store. The man claimed he also suffered damages to his vehicle while driving between stores.
Barr, who says he is filing a case seeking $5,000, told the Chattanooga Times Free Press: “I can’t get happy. I have this sandwich on my mind. I can’t think straight. It just consumes you.”

Rideshare driver busted for kidnapping claims toddler’s dad sold her for $10K
A rideshare driver has been nabbed in the kidnapping of a 2-year-old girl in Pennsylvania — but she told police the tot’s father “sold” her for $10,000, according to a new report.
Sharena Nancy, allegedly drove off with little Nalani Johnson just after 5 p.m. Saturday after giving the girl and her father, Paul Johnson, a ride, local outlet KDKA reported.
Nancy, whose car has both Uber and Lyft tags on it, claimed the dad pawned his own daughter off to someone for $10,000, and that Nancy was instructed to drive her “20 minutes from a gas station in Monroeville along Route 22.”
She told detectives that a woman standing next to a silver SUV with out-of-state plates flagged her down, the station reported. A second woman was reportedly waiting in the car.
Nancy said she handed Nalani and her car seat over to the women and drove away, the report said.
Meanwhile, Johnson told police that he was riding with Nalani and a pal, Justin Rouse, in Nancy’s Toyota Yaris when she stopped the car at an intersection in Penn Hills, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Johnson got out and when he went to retrieve Nalani, Nancy allegedly drove off, according to a criminal complaint obtained by the newspaper.
The dad said he then called Nancy’s cell phone to no avail and then police, who issued an Amber Alert.
Nancy was pulled over around 7:30 p.m. and taken into custody. She faces charges of kidnapping of a minor, interference with custody of children and concealment of whereabouts of a child, KDKA reported.
Nalani is still nowhere to be found.
Johnson’s mother Taji Walsh told the station that Nancy made up the whole story.
“The things that she indicated in her arrest record, which is public knowledge, are unfounded,” Walsh claimed.
If her son were involved, she added, “he wouldn’t be walking freely, he’d be locked somewhere up like [Nancy] is.”
Johnson has not been charged.
Nancy’s husband MD Raihan Uddin, told KDKA that his wife didn’t take the child — but claimed she knew Johnson.
“News says Paul Johnson doesn’t know Nancy, but Penn Hills detective told me they knew each other and Paul’s family members told me he knew Nancy since March…” Uddin told the station in a Facebook message.
Nancy is being held at the Allegheny County Jail while multiple authorities — including the FBI — continue to search for Nalani.
Uber told the station that no one with Nancy’s name used the app over the weekend, and Lyft said that the incident did not happen on its platform, adding that the “allegations are deeply disturbing.”

Serial rapist found after trying to join the police force hunting him
Cops hunting a serial rapist in Georgia found him right under their noses — when he tried to join their police force.
Kenneth Thomas Bowen III, 24, only came into the spotlight when he joined Clayton County Police Department’s academy in 2018. He was fired after just a few months for lateness and constant lying.
Officers later realized Bowen had been named a “suspicious” person after at least one of eight sex attacks that terrorized Jonesboro since 2015, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Detectives soon noticed the “striking resemblance” between Bowen’s photo and police sketches, police said at a press conference.
After also linking Bowen’s tattoos to the suspect’s description, officers obtained a search warrant for his DNA which linked him to the eight attacks, police said last week.
“Had he not attempted to join ranks in the Clayton County Police Department, it is questionable as to when we would have apprehended him,” Clayton County Police Chief Kevin Roberts said, according to AJC.
Bowen has been charged with seven counts of rape and one count of sexual battery. Officials said the attacks all happened within a two-mile radius of where Bowen lived in Jonesboro. None occurred during his time at the academy.
“WE GOT HIM!” the police department wrote on Facebook last week alongside a video of Bowen under arrest.
“Citizens of Clayton County can rest a little bit easier knowing that the serial rapist has been CAPTURED! Great investigative skill set and excellent teamwork has brought his terror to an end!”

Video shows rodent leaping into deep fryer at Whataburger
A Texas rodent was caught on camera jumping into a deep fryer at a Whataburger over the weekend.
Facebook user Brushawn Lewis posted the footage on his page Saturday, saying: “This s–t is crazy.”
“I’m at whataburger in Bastrop Tx. It’s a damn rat just out in the open!” Lewis wrote in the caption. “But it did get deep fried! Smdh.”
Lewis’ video, which has been shared more than 60,000 times, first shows the tiny critter on a counter near the deep fryer, with Whataburger workers trying desperately to snatch him up — to no avail.
“This girl really fixin’ to try and catch this rat,” Lewis says, moments before the rodent takes its fatal plunge.
“Oh, Lord!” he yells. “It went in the grease!”
Customers can be heard screaming and freaking out afterward.
“I’ll try and get it out,” a worker says.
“When it’s cooked it’ll float up to the top,” Lewis jokes. “I’ve seen it all.”
Whataburger officials responded to the video on its Facebook page, telling users that the location had been shut down and sanitized.
“Thank you for bringing this to our attention,” the fast-food chain said. “At Whataburger, cleanliness and food safety are top priorities for us. In this instance, we closed the restaurant out of an abundance of caution and notified pest control. The entire restaurant has since been cleaned and sanitized. We addressed this situation as quickly as possible, reinforcing procedures with our Family Members. While we’ll continue to be very diligent, it’s important to know there was no history of this type incident at this unit and there is no ongoing issue.”

Woman arrested after impersonating 21 year old daughter during traffic stop
A Utah woman was arrested Saturday after police say she impersonated her 21-year-old daughter during a routine traffic stop.
Heather Garcia, 38, was booked into the Davis County Jail early Saturday morning on several charges including providing false personal information to a peace officer after she was caught allegedly lying to authorities about her identity to avoid getting arrested for outstanding warrants.
Garcia was driving a silver BMW when she was pulled over on Main Street in Farmington after a Davis County police officer noticed her vehicle did not have a license plate, KABB reported.
During a search of her car, police recovered drug paraphernalia and a white powdery substance.
Garcia reportedly identified herself as Mercedes, adding she was born in 1998.
Police soon discovered Garcia provided her daughter’s name and eventually made a positive ID.
Garcia was charged with several drug charges including possession or use of a controlled substance, marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to inmate records.
She was also charged with driving without insurance and driving with a suspended or revoked license or registration.
