Italian chef busted for drugs says he was ‘researching new flavors’
He was just trying to weed out bad flavors.
A well-known Sicilian chef was found with the wrong type of pot alongside his pans — but insisted he was just “researching new flavors” for his contemporary cuisine, according to reports.
Carmelo Chiaramonte was busted with a pair of 6-foot marijuana plants and just over a pound of Indian hemp plant heads during a raid on his home near Catania in eastern Sicily, according to AFP, citing local media.
Officers also found cannabis-infused wine, coffee, olives — and even tuna, according to the reports.
He was arrested on suspicion of drug dealing and released pending trial, the BBC reported, citing local media
The 50-year-old chef denied dealing drugs — telling police he turned to the Devil’s Lettuce for fresh ideas, because he is a pioneering “agro-food consultant for third-millennium cuisine,” according to the BBC.
Chiaramonte found fame through TV food shows in Italy and once told a newspaper reporter that “a cook is a drug addict and an alchemist,” according to the reports.

101-year-old widow died after legs broken by aide pulling her from bed
A 101-year-old woman died after her home-health aide broke both her legs while trying to get her out of bed, a new report says.
Emily Sims passed away after her home-caregiver, Beryl Allen, forcefully swung her legs out of bed by the ankles, leading to the victim’s fatal injuries, the Mail Online said.
An investigation launched in Cornwall, England, where Sims lived, ruled that the elderly widow’s death was the direct result of her mishandling by Allen, who has since died of natural causes.
Before her death, Sims told her niece on video that Allen forcibly grabbed her by her ankles and swung them to the floor, toppling the 101-year-old to the ground, breaking both her thigh bones. The bilateral spiral fractures in her femurs led to a perforated duodenal ulcer, causing her death, authorities said.
Sims also spoke to police before her death in November 2017, saying her injuries were Allen’s fault.
“She’s too rough with me, she pulls me around,” Sims said. “She ought not be a carer – she’s too heavy-handed.”
Allen refused to cooperate with police at the time, according to the Mail.
Medical experts who testified during the probe said Sims’ injuries were supported by her version of events.

Arizona man killed son by pouring hot water down his throat to exorcise demon
An Arizona man murdered his son while trying to exorcise a demon from him — pouring boiling hot water down the boy’s throat and drowning him, according to local media reports.
Pablo Martinez told investigators he saw something evil inside his son, 6, while giving him a bath on Thursday — admitting to holding the boy under a faucet of hot water to cast the demon out, according to NBC affiliate News 4 Tucson.
Police were first called to the home on the Pascua Yaqui Native American reservation to a report of a burned child when the man’s wife called 911.
According to court documents, the boy’s adopted mother heard “a gurgling sound coming from the bathroom” and found her husband holding the boy under the faucet in the bathtub.
When she told him to stop, Martinez told her he “had to do it,” according to court papers reviewed by News 4 Tuscon.
Martinez, 31, also admitted to holding his son under water for five to 10 minutes. Officers are charging him with first-degree murder.
Police found the child in his bed, completely naked and not breathing.
The boy had burns to 15% of his body, including on his forearms, elbows and head, and was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Toddler Dies After Being Left in Car With Heater on for 5 Hours While Mother Allegedly Drank With Friend in West Carson
Authorities are investigating the death of a 2-year-old girl who was left in a car with the heater on and windows rolled up for more than five hours while her mother drank with a friend nearby, records show.
June Love Agosto died at a hospital on Sept. 23 after she was found unconscious inside her mother’s vehicle, which was parked in the 22400 block of South Vermont Avenue in the unincorporated county area of West Carson during the early-morning hours, according to a report issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The Coroner’s report spelled the child’s last name as Augosto but family members corrected the spelling.
An autopsy was performed, but her cause of death was yet to be determined pending the results of further forensic tests.
After first telling officials she left the child alone for only a few minutes while she knocked on a babysitter’s door, she ultimately admitted that was not the case, according to the coroner’s report.
The girl’s mother told investigators she left the child in the car, alone, about 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 21, then got into another vehicle nearby to drink alcohol with a friend, according to the coroner’s report. The woman said she turned on the car’s heater and placed a blanket on her daughters lap so she wouldn’t get cold.
The woman reported that she fell asleep and awoke about 5 a.m., the report stated. She checked on the toddler and found she was unresponsive in her car seat.
“Vomit was present on her shirt and the car seat. Skin was coming off the decedent’s back,” the report said. “(The mother) places her on the grass and sprayed her with the water hose in an attempt to cool her down. The decedent was taken into the house and a call was placed to 911.”
Paramedics took the girl to a hospital, but she could not be saved, officials said. Paramedics noted apparent burns to the girls face, chest and arms, as well as cloudiness in her eyes, the report stated. “Her temperature upon arrival was 107.5 degrees.”
Investigators learned the mother had a history of drug abuse and lost custody of an older child six years ago due to neglect. The child was taken during a drug bust in which the mother and a man were arrested on suspicion of possessing cocaine for sales , operating a drug factory and risk of injury to a minor in Connecticut, the Norwich Bulletin reported.
The mother had not been arrested Sunday, according to Los Angeles County booking records.
A fund has been established online to help the family with funeral expenses.

Preacher stops to check his phone while speaking in tongues
As a kid, my religious parents sometimes took us to huge events put on by a Catholic charismatic movement called Southern California Renewal Communities (SCRC). During the services held in large stadiums in Los Angeles attended by thousands of people, there were moments when the entire crowd would start speaking in tongues. I remember chills running up and down my body as the huge chorus of voices would harmonize in a massive, yet whispered Middle Eastern-ish cadence.
Today, I think people who speak in tongues are either deluded or con artists, but that doesn’t change the beautiful image of that memory — which makes me feel bad for the kids who have to sit through a service put on by Preacher Perry Stone.
The Friendly Atheist shared a video of Stone leading a service at Omega Center International in Tennessee this Thursday, and it shows what it’s like when people just phone it in while they’re supposedly being anointed by the Holy Spirit.
As Stone prays and rattles off gibberish, he repeatedly checks his phone. At one point, he’s seemingly distracted by the phone so much that his prayers melt into a prolonged moan.
Even giving him the benefit of the doubt (Maybe he’s reading something related to the service?), he’s not even trying to be convincing. He should take a lesson from Pastor Hank Kunneman.

Infant dead after dad leaves twins in car outside Alabama car dealership
An 11-month-old boy died after he and his twin sister were left in a hot car for more than three hours outside an Alabama Honda dealership where their dad worked, according to news reports.
Police responding to the Sunny King Honda dealership in Oxford, Alabama at around noon on Friday said temperatures had topped 90 degrees by the time the two kids were taken out of the car — where they had been left since 8:30 a.m.
Both were rushed to a nearby hospital, where the boy was pronounced dead but his sister is doing well, according to CNN.
Police have not identified the children or the father, who told police he only remembered the kids were still in the car when his wife called and asked how they twins were doing.
No charges have been filed.
“All indications seem that this is a tragic accident,” Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown told the network.
“No one can fathom the way this family feels, and I especially want to make sure that people are sympathetic to this family and that they get all the facts before they pass judgment.”
The car dealership said in a statement that “the Sunny King Automotive Group family is hurting.”
Oxford Police Chief Bill Partridge said on Facebook that the investigation is ongoing.
The case bears chilling similarities to the case of Rockland County dad Juan Rodriguez, whose one-year-old twins died after he left them in a sweltering car outside his job in the Bronx.
Rodriguez is facing two counts of manslaughter.

Motorist was killed after looking at another driver the wrong way
PHOENIX – A Phoenix man was arrested this week on suspicion of shooting and killing another man who looked at him while stopped at a red light in March, authorities say.
Nicolas Elliott, 30, was booked into a Maricopa County jail Thursday on suspicion of first-degree murder, aggravated assault, misconduct involving weapons and drug-related charges, according to the Phoenix Police Department.
Police, in a press release, said Elliott shot and killed 26-year-old Alex W. Mixon on March 1 about 3:15 a.m., “for merely looking at him while stopped at a red traffic light.”
Mixon was traveling west on Thunderbird Road in a Dodge pickup truck at the time of the shooting, according to the police press release.
The shooting caused the truck to cross into eastbound lanes and leave the roadway, according to police. The truck hit a power pole and then traveled through a wall before coming to a stop.
Mixon was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died of his injuries, according to the police press release. He was the sole occupant of the truck, according to Maricopa County court documents.
Police say they originally believed the incident was a single-vehicle collision. However, an autopsy on March 2 revealed Mixon had been shot and his death was determined to be a homicide, court documents say.
Elliott fled the scene after the shooting, the court documents say.
Surveillance video from the area of 32nd Street and Thunderbird Road, which police say was the closest major intersection to the shooting, showed Mixon stopped at a red light March 1 about 2:40 a.m. when a larger pickup truck stopped directly beside him in a left-turn lane, according to court documents. The video shows the larger truck did not turn left onto 32nd Street and instead continued west on Thunderbird Road while Mixon followed, the court documents add.
The shooting and collision that followed were out of the camera’s view, court documents say.
An anonymous person reported in July that they overheard Elliott talking about shooting someone in the face earlier this year because the man gave him a dirty look while they were stopped next to each other at an intersection, according to the court documents.
Three other people interviewed by police said they were present at the time of the shooting, according to court documents. They said Mixon “merely looked over at (Elliott) which in turn enraged (him) to fire his handgun at (Mixon),” the court documents add.
Other witnesses interviewed by police said Elliott bragged about the shooting, according to court documents.
During an interview with police Thursday, Elliott said he remembered arguing with a man while at a red light, the court documents say. He said he had forgotten whether he fired a weapon at the man but said “if he could go back in time, he would take the incident back,” the court documents say.
Police say Elliott also admitted that firearms and drugs found during his arrest belonged to him, according to court documents.
Elliott is being held on a $1 million bond and is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 3, according to court documents.

Kanye West Epic Freestyle at Queens Church …
People who stay talking about missing the “old Kanye” might wanna listen to this — ’cause Mr. West was in NYC dropping bars like it was 2004 again ahead of his album drop.
Ye was in Jamaica, Queens Sunday at The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York, where he put on his weekly service with the help of the local congregation there — and at one point, the MC did what he arguably does best (besides making music) … spittin’ rhymes!
Check it out … Kanye joyfully rapped with the help of the choir behind him, and it sounds like the man was flowing from off the top. A pure freestyle, in other words.
He had the whole church rockin’ with him too as he got everyone to put their hands up, jamming along to the music before eventually stepping back and letting another guy — who looks like he might’ve been the pastor for the day — take center stage again.
BTW, Ye had some talented company with him too. Word on the ground is Akon, Swizz Beatz and Alexander Wang were all in the building. So was Kim, North and Jonathan Cheban.
As for this though … Kanye looks happy as hell high heaven here. And rightly so, of course — he is supposed to be
releasing his new album, “Jesus is King,” later Sunday … and based on
what we’ve heard from here to Detroit, he’s in a great mode right now.
He’s also been on the move — Kanye was just in Chicago Saturday night, where he performed alongside his pal, Chance the Rapper, building the hype for his new record even more.
If this freestyle and the music we’ve been hearing lately is any indication … it should be a good one. And now, we wait … ah, the anticipation. ?

Man in blackface poses with Florida mayor at ‘African safari-themed’ police fashion show
A Florida police department held an African safari-themed senior fashion show — where a man in blackface posed with a local mayor.
Medley Mayor Roberto Martell is seen smiling in a photograph with two women and a man in a tribal-like costume who was holding a spear at the annual event hosted by the town’s police department for nearly the past 20 years, WPLG reports.
Photos posted on social media of the Sept. 20 soiree show the unidentified man gleefully dancing with other revelers — and even being recognized with an award at the fashion show, the station reports.
“If you know the history of blackface, since the 1800s it was used as a minstrel show, a way to depict black people in a derogatory way,” Miami-Dade County NAACP president Ruban Roberts told WPLG. “In 2019, the mayor [and] police department should be aware of what those images conjure up in people of color.”
The photo is a clear example of not only “ignorance” but racial insensitivity, Roberts said.
Martell, who was elected in the Miami-Dade County town in 2012, said he was “very sorry” for the photo when reached by The Post early Friday.
“This is a senior event that the police have been doing for the past nineteen years,” Martell wrote. “We are sorry if we hurt anyone’s feelings and it will not happen again.”
In a statement issued later in the day, Martell said he was “genuinely sorry.”
“I’m upset with myself for not realizing at the time the photo was being taken how serious and hurtful this image would be to people of color. I was insensitive.”
Martell told the Miami Herald he plans to meet with NAACP staffers to discuss the incident, a plan that Roberts welcomes.
“We need to spread a message of awareness and prevent this from happening again,” the NAACP official told the newspaper.
Medley’s police chief, meanwhile, initially agreed to answer questions on camera, but later acknowledged the incident in a statement, WPLG reports.
“This event brings our senior citizen together to promote community and have a good time,” Chief Jeanette Said-Jinete said in a statement. “This year’s theme was African Safari, and unfortunately, a 78-year-old participant dressed inappropriately and clearly did not understand how others might be offended. For this, we apologize and regret the incident.”

New Jersey family’s Halloween display depicting a man hanging in noose sparks outrage
A New Jersey family’s Halloween display depicting a man being hanged from a noose sparked outrage from neighbors and the NAACP — which said it should be considered a hate crime, according to new reports.
Ryan McDonald displayed the stuffed, dark-complexioned dummy hanging from a wooden gallows-like structure in front of his home in Mannington, Salem County — and was forced to take it down when he received a flood of backlash, CBS Philly reported.
“The hangman’s noose was going to be a part of a pirate theme that we did, and I guess some people just thought it wasn’t quite appropriate,” McDonald told the station.
Beyond just being inappropriate, the display should be considered a hate crime, the local NAACP chapter says.
“Put a scarecrow up on a bale of hay, we don’t care,” Salem County NAACP president Nelson Carney Jr. told the station. “But if it has a noose around its neck, we don’t care what color. We’re not going to accept it.”
Salem County Prosecutor John Lenahan told NJ.com that he reported the hangman to the New Jersey State Police, which has jurisdiction over that road.
A state trooper spoke to the resident and asked him to remove it because of public complaints — which he did, Lenahan said.
“It’s five weeks from Halloween and I hope this is the only complaint like this we get,” the prosecutor told the outlet.
The display was determined not to be a hate crime, according to Lenahan.
But the NAACP president told CBS Philly that the Attorney General’s Office is investigating.
McDonald insisted he didn’t intend to offend anyone with the display.
“I can understand why that would be an issue, but we’re not a racist family at all,” he told the station.
He’s also apologized and said he’ll never again put the same prop in front of his home, according to the report.
“At this time, I accept his apology,” Carney told the station. “But he needs to be educated more on the history of African Americans.”
