Breakfast, lunch is now free to all students in 77 Atlanta public schools
ATLANTA (AP) — Students in 77 Atlanta public schools are getting free breakfast and lunch, no matter their family income.
News outlets report the no-cost meal service is expanding from 60 schools to 77 this year. All school’s using the district’s food service are eligible.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture provides federal reimbursements for meals under a program Congress authorized in 2010. To qualify, schools must show that at least 40% of students receive some type of aid like food stamps. The district says 49% of students meet those requirements.
The program has just started but the district anticipates high participation from students.
Superintendent Meria Carstarphen says student feedback on the quality of the food has been positive.

Mom believes baby was slashed with scalpel during C-section
A British mom claims her newborn was slashed in the face with a scalpel during a Caesarean section, leaving her scarred for life.
Amber Woollard, 23, claims baby Valenci needed plastic surgery for a 2-inch cut under her tot’s nose — with the surgeon telling her it could not have happened naturally, according to The Mirror.
Baby Valenci is expected to need at least three more surgeries and may have permanent scarring, according to the paper.
“I see this as a case of serious case of neglect from the NHS,” the young mom said, referring to Britain’s National Health Service.
“My darling daughter has been left with scars for the rest of her life because of this,” Wollard added. “The incident has shattered my faith in the NHS, I don’t trust them anymore. To see your newborn with injuries to her face is really upsetting.”
However, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital said it is “very unlikely” the baby was cut with a scalpel.
“We’d like to repeat our apologies to Ms. Woollard for not meeting her expectations and the distress caused following the birth of her daughter,” the hospital said, according to The Mirror. “We are sorry that her daughter was born with signs of facial trauma and we have explained to Ms. Woollard why we believe the facial marks were very unlikely to have been caused by the scalpel used during the cesarean section.”

Shopper finds dead man in her pickup truck as she loads groceries
An upstate shopper made a horrifying discovery as she loaded up groceries from a supermarket — a dead body in the back of her pickup truck, according to police.
The unidentified woman was at Tops Market in Lockport, near Rochester, Friday morning when she made the disturbing find, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.
“She opened the tailgate of her truck to place groceries and noticed the deceased male inside the bed,” police said.
“She had no idea who it was,” Sheriff James Voutour told the Lockport Union-Sun & Journal.
Authorities had not identified the dead man as of Friday and were still investigating whether his death was an accident or crime, the sheriff told the paper.
Fingerprints and facial recognition will be used to try to identify the man, who was described as possibly Hispanic, in his 40s or 50s, about 5 feet 8, 180 pounds, and wearing jeans and a light-colored shirt.

Disgruntled diner shoots waiter to death over sandwich delay
A customer shot a waiter to death at a pizzeria in the Paris suburbs after being made to wait too long for a sandwich, witnesses say.
The 29-year-old waiter was killed in Noisy-le-Grand, around nine miles from the center of Paris, on Friday night, the prosecutor’s office in neighboring Bobigny told CNN.
Witnesses say the man was angry about the length of time taken to prepare his sandwich, the prosecutor’s office confirmed.
Staff called police after the waiter was shot in the shoulder with a handgun, the AFP news agency reports.
The gunman fled the restaurant and the waiter died at the scene. Police have opened a murder investigation and the suspect is still on the run, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Local residents expressed their shock at the incident.
“He was killed for a sandwich?” said one, according to AFP.
“It is sad,” a 29-year-old woman told AFP. “It’s a quiet restaurant, without any problems. It just opened a few months ago.”
However, the surrounding area is known for high levels of crime, including drug dealing and public drunkenness, according to AFP.
Disadvantaged Parisian suburbs, known as “banlieues,” have suffered for years from political neglect and frequent police crackdowns.
In March, social media rumors of child abductions by members of the Roma ethnic minority sparked a wave of violence in France, though authorities dismissed the claims as baseless.
Roma were attacked in Bobigny and Clichy-sous-Bois, another suburb northeast of Paris, as well as Nanterre and Colombes.

Woman accused of beating parents with mother’s cane, oxygen tanks
MIDVALE, Utah — A Utah woman was arrested Saturday for abusing and assaulting her parents, police say.
Anne Cockrell, 42, was arrested on two accounts of aggravated abuse of an elder and two accounts of aggravated assault, according to the probable cause statement.
A Salt Lake County Sheriff’s officer responded to a domestic call at a hotel in Midvale. Cockrell was away from the scene when the officer arrived.
According to the statement, Cockrell “went crazy on her mother and started beating and hitting her” inside the hotel where her parents stay. Cockrell hit her mother with her own cane and oxygen tanks.
Cockrell’s father entered the room to break up the fight. She then began hitting him with her hands, cane and oxygen tanks.
Then she poured laundry detergent on both of her parents while telling them she wanted to kill them, the probable cause statement reports.
The report says her father had lacerations and bruising on his arms. It did not mention her mother’s condition. Both victims are over the age of 65.
Cockrell is being held in Salt Lake County Jail.

Man who lost job, girlfriend threatens mass shooting of ‘good 100 kills’
A Florida man who recently lost his job and got dumped by his girlfriend threatened to carry out a mass shooting over the weekend — telling his ex that “a good 100 kills would be nice,” according to cops.
“I wanna open fire on a large crowd of people from over 3 miles away,” said Tristan Scott Wix, 25, in an alleged text message to his ex.
“I’d wanna break a world record for longest confirmed kill ever,” the young man added, according to police. “I need a spotter.”
Wix, a resident of Daytona Beach, was arrested Friday in Volusia County and charged with making threats to commit a mass shooting. The local sheriff’s office revealed his text messages in a press release.
“A school is a weak target,” Wix allegedly said. “Id be more likely to open fire on a large crowd of people…I already have a location (laughing cry face emoji) is that bad?”
At one point, cops said he flat-out acknowledged that he could be arrested for his words.
Ah well even if you told someone, me saying I wanna do it and think about it is not the same as actually doing it lol,” wrote Wix. “Was kinda hoping someone would come into my life worth not doing it for, for the sake of all those people (laughing cry face emoji). I’m not crazy I just wanna die and I wanna have fun doing it, but I’m the most patient person in the world.”
Wix’s ex showed the messages to deputies and he was later tracked to a local Winn-Dixie, where he was taken into custody without incident.
Wix initially told detectives he didn’t own any firearms “but is fascinated with mass shootings.”
“When you look at this kid’s background, he is the profile of a shooter,” Volusia County Sheriff Michael Chitwood told CNN. “He lost his job, he lost his girlfriend, he’s depressed, he’s got the ammunition and he wants to become known for being the most prolific killer in American history.”
Despite his claims, authorities reportedly recovered a .22 caliber hunting rifle and 400 rounds of ammunition at Wix’s apartment while executing a search warrant. He was being held Sunday without bond.
Wix’s arrest comes just weeks after the deadly mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas. A number of people have threatened to carry out similar rampages — with “copycats” popping up throughout the United States.
FBI officials recently told a congressional hearing that the bureau was reportedly investigating nearly 850 people as possible domestic terrorists. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released earlier this month found that nearly half of Americans believe the chances of another mass shooting happening in the next three months was “highly likely.

White nationalist arrested for alleged threat to shoot up Jewish center
Police in Ohio arrested a white nationalist for allegedly threatening to shoot up a Jewish community center in an Instagram video — and seized an arsenal of weapons from his parent’s home that included two AR-15 style rifles, bulletproof armor and a ton of ammunition.
James Patrick Reardon, 20, was charged Saturday with telecommunications harassment and aggravated menacing for allegedly posting a chilling clip of a man firing multiple rounds from a rifle in the dark, as sirens and screams can be heard in the background, WYTV reported.
The post tagged the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown and the caption read: “Police identified the Youngstown Jewish Family Community shooter as local white nationalist Seamus O’Reardon.”
That name was a pseudonym Reardon used online, New Middletown police said.
“He was implying that he was going to be identified as the shooter of the Jewish Center,” police chief Vince D’egidio told WFMJ.
The FBI Violent Crimes Task Force raided Reardon’s mother’s home on Friday and police seized a cache of weapons, including: the two semi-automatic rifles, a rifle with a bayonet, a .40 caliber anti-tank gun, knives, several magazines, 223 rounds of ammunition, a gas mask and a bulletproof vest.
A Confederate flag flask and a jacket with Irish Republican Army patches on it were also seized.
D’egidio said “there were several videos that [Reardon] posted on Instagram where he used a lot of derogatory remarks towards the Jewish community and the African-American community.”
“This is a person that has declared himself as a white nationalist,” D’egidio added. “With the hate crimes and everything else going on, we want to make sure we did our part to make sure this person was taken off the streets very quickly.”
Reardon was at the 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, VA, where a neo-Nazi drove into a crowd of protesters, killing a 32-year-old woman and injuring scores of others.
In a YouTube video documentary from the rally, Reardon, then-18, says he considers himself a white nationalist and member of the alt-right, not a neo-Nazi, and adds that he wants “a homeland for white people.”
He says his parents, a “union teacher” mom and “blue-collar worker” dad, don’t agree with his views.
Reardon, who could be seen smirking in his mugshot, was being held on $250,000 bail. He will be arraigned in Struthers Municipal court on Monday.
Meanwhile, police said they’d were beefing up security at the community center.
The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation thanked cops for their hard work.
“This is a clear example of everything going right. The system worked,” it said in a statement. “We take very seriously the need to be vigilant to ensure the safety of all members of the local Jewish community…”

Social media rivalry between two Dallas rappers escalated into a shooting that left a 9-year-old girl dead days before school started
East Dallas resident Brandoniya Bennet was struck by a bullet in the head Wednesday as she sat on a couch after getting her nails done for the first day of school, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.
The suspect, Tyrese Simmons, 19, turned himself in Thursday and faces a capital murder charge, Dallas Police said in a statement.
Simmons allegedly went to an apartment complex to confront a rival rapper after the two exchanged disparaging comments about one another on social media, according to authorities. The other person did not come out of his apartment, so Simmons circled around to the back, police said.
Then Simmons opened fire, shooting at the wrong apartment and fatally wounding Brandoniya, police said.
“As adults, as parents as police officers, we’re supposed to make them safe, as community leaders, we’re supposed to make them safe,” Dallas Police Department Maj. Danny Williams told the affiliate. “She was sitting in her house, she felt safe … she was only 9-years-old.”
Simmons’ bail was set at $500,000. Information on his attorney was not immediately available.
