Iggy Azalea shares controversial view of cultural appropriation, response to nude photo hack
Iggy Azalea is back, and she’s just as controversial as ever.
The 29-year-old Australian rapper, who made a splash on the music scene five years ago with her mega-hit “Fancy,” sat down with Cosmopolitan to discuss how her life has changed in recent years.
In the wide-ranging interview, Azalea reflected on past backlash she’s received for things like her look, which some have deemed an appropriation of black culture, and racist tweets that resurfaced during her run in the limelight. While she didn’t address the tweets head-on, she did respond to claims of cultural appropriation.
In true Azalea style, her thoughts were controversial. She said cultural appropriation is subjective and she isn’t that sorry for her past behavior.
“You could ask one person of the same race, ‘Does this affect you?’ and they will say yes,” she said. “But another person will say no. They could be from the same place, same everything, but have different perspectives about it.”
She added: “I’m still going to make the same type of music and still be ridiculous and larger than life,” she said. “So I can’t be that (expletive) sorry about it.”
Azalea also reflected on when she went to a mental health retreat in Arizona, imposed on her by her management team.
“They just didn’t want me to (expletive) up my own life, basically,” she said, noting she needed a break from the chaos. “I just couldn’t get out of functioning at this insanity level. Where you’re like, ‘Whoa, hold on, don’t operate the vehicle.’ ”
Azalea also spoke out when outtakes from her GQ Australia shoot were stolen earlier this summer. The leaked images showed her naked and were shared online, she said. She posted on social media about her frustrations, but she told Cosmopolitan many people didn’t relate to her response because she’s done racy shoots in the past.
“That’s the problem with you understanding consent,” she said. “When somebody else chooses for me, that’s not consensual.”
In July, Azalea’s second album finally arrived, without a high-charting lead single or the momentum of her debut. The title of her sophomore release, “In My Defense,” reads like a response to the years of delays and drama that preceded it.

A Louisiana woman reportedly told police the meth found in her vagina was not hers
OUACHITA PARISH, La. – A Louisiana woman reportedly told police she did not know where the meth – found in her vagina – came from, Fox News reported.
Ashley Beth Rolland, 23, was accused July 31 of stealing thousands of dollars from the home of a man she’d been saying with, according to documents from the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office.
The man told West Monroe police Rolland had swiped the cash and left while he was in the shower; Rolland reportedly confirmed that she took the money and left.
According to the documents, a female correctional officer later searched Rolland and found – hidden in her vagina – $6,233 in cash and about one gram of meth. According to Fox News, Rolland denied the meth was hers.
Rolland was arrested and charged with theft and narcotics possession. She remains in jail on an $8,000 bond.

Mo’Nique Questions If Tyler Perry Paid Taraji P. Henson ‘Fairly’
She also has some thoughts on Tyler Perry buying Tiffany Haddish a car…
Mo’Nique is still questioning other people’s check. First, she was crying over Whoopi Goldberg‘s salary at “The View” and now she is asking if Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson was paid “fairly” by Tyler Perry.
Back in June, Henson said about Tyler Perry, “I think the industry knew I was talented. But it’s about money. Are you bankable? I had to continuously prove that. I’ve been trying to prove and improve. I was asking for half a million. I didn’t get paid that until I did my first Tyler Perry film.”
Sounds like she was happy with her salary, but in an interview with Comedy Hype, Mo’Nique said, “He says, ‘I’m the first person to pay Taraji P. Henson the most money she’s ever made.’ And then we say, ‘But did you pay her fairly?’ And then he said, ‘I paid her more than she’s ever made.’ What does that mean, brother?”
She then made a statement about a car Perry bought for Tiffany Haddish. “When you go and buy Tiffany Haddish a car” and her husband Sidney Hicks added, “If I give you what you are worth, you can buy your own car.” Watch below:
In another interview that was released last month by Comedy Hype, the Oscar winner said about Whoopi Goldberg’s money, “Because Whoopi Goldberg told me the salary she makes from ‘The View.’ And that hurt my feelings. You’ve been there for 10 years and you accept them paying you that? And you’re telling me, ‘Don’t worry about the little ones coming up? Damn if I ain’t gotta be worried about you too. Because you accept that salary, it makes it hard for me. And how hard do you think it’s gonna make for the ones who ain’t here yet, because you accept that salary?”
She continued, “What if Moms Mabley didn’t worry about you? What if those ones didn’t make it better for us? So, I tried not to take it personal, but it’s personal. Because these are the women I look to. So I don’t want the little girl who’s not here yet… or a little girl down the street at the juicebar… I don’t want her to walk away and say, ‘That ain’t who I thought she was.’”
Whoopi Goldberg is allegedly paid $5 million a year at “The View” and net worth is supposedly $50 million. Henson’s net worth is allegedly $16 million.

Researchers find way to measure blood pressure with a selfie video
But it might not work for all skin tones just yet.
In the near future, you might not have to traipse to your doctor or pharmacy to determine your blood pressure. Researchers have figured out a way to accurately measure it with your phone’s camera.
A selfie video might be all you need to find out your blood pressure, per a study by researchers in Canada and China. University of Toronto developmental psychologist Kang Lee and his postdoctoral researcher Paul Zheng developed a technology called transdermal optical imaging (TOI).
It works by taking into account the fact our facial skin is translucent. Optical sensors on smartphones can capture red light reflected from hemoglobin under our skin, which allows TOI to visualize and measure changes in blood flow.
The researchers used the tech to analyze two-minute selfie videos of 1,328 adults that were captured with an iPhone camera. Compared with standard methods of determining blood pressure, they were able to measure three types of blood pressure with around 95 percent accuracy. TOI can also analyze faces in pre-recorded videos.
Lee co-founded Nuralogix, a startup that released an app called Anura. When you record a 30-second video selfie, the app provides you with resting heart rate and stress level measurements. Nuralogix plans to release another version of the app in China this fall that adds blood pressure measurements to the mix.
On the privacy front, Lee says the app uploads results of the analysis to the cloud, but not people’s video selfies. Nuralogix plans to offer access to more detailed health data for a monthly fee. The team eventually hopes to track other health attributes with the tech, including blood glucose levels, hemoglobin and cholesterol.
However, the tech needs extra research to make it more accurate, Lee said. The vast majority of study participants were of East Asian or European descent, and it didn’t include people with very dark or fair skin. Considering Latinx and African-American folks in the US are at above-average risk of hypertension, TOI may not yet be accurate enough for the people who’d perhaps benefit most from it. Expanding the diversity of research participants will improve the tech’s accuracy, while finding people with very high or low blood pressure who don’t medicate for it has proven a challenge too.
The technology could help people at risk of hypertension- or hypotension-related issues to track their blood pressure without the need for a dedicated device. It could also help people with limited healthcare access, such as folks who live in remote areas. “If you set up a computer or your phone, you can get a doctor who is, let’s say, in Toronto and then you can talk to each other and diagnose simultaneously,” Lee said.

The next “American Crime Story” season will be about Bill Clinton’s impeachment after Monica Lewinsky scandal
For two seasons, “American Crime Story” has portrayed two of the most salacious celebrity-involved crimes of the 1990s, and the next installment of the FX series is no different. The third season will be dedicated to President Clinton’s impeachment following his affair with Monica Lewinsky.
The show covered the O.J. Simpson trial in 2016 and the assassination of Gianni Versace in 2018. Both Hurricane Katrina and the Clinton impeachment were rumored as possible themes for Season 3.
Variety has confirmed the third season will be based on Jeffer Toobin’s book “A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President.”
Production of the new season will begin in February 2020 and it will premiere the following September, according to an announcement made during the Television Critics Association press tour, Variety reports.
Variety reports Beanie Feldstein will play Monica Lewinsky, the 22-year-old White House intern who had an affair with President Clinton. Feldstein recently starred in the coming-of-age comedy “Booksmart.” Feldstein, who also won raves for her role in the film “Lady Bird,” comes from an acting family — she is Jonah Hill‘s sister.
Sarah Paulson, who has held roles in every “American Horror Story” season and in one season of “American Crime Story,” will play Linda Tripp, Lewinsky’s confidant.
Annaleigh Ashford will play Paula Jones, who sued President Clinton for sexual harassment.
The season will be executive produced by Paulson, Sarah Burgess, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson, Larry Karaszewski, Scott Alexander, Alexis Martin Woodall, and of course, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, the creators of both “American Crime Story” and “American Horror Story.”
The anthology shows often utilize the same actors in different roles each season. In “American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson,” Paulson played Marcia Clark, the lead prosecutor in the O.J. Simpson case. Ashford had a small role as Andrew Cunanan’s friend in “American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace.”
The third season is set to be titled “Impeachment: American Crime Story,” according to Variety.

A Groundbreaking Photo Of Beyoncé Has Been Selected For The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery
“See Your Halo” was shot by Tyler Mitchell, the first black photographer to shoot a cover for Vogue.
A groundbreaking photograph of Beyoncé has been selected to enter the permanent collection of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.
The shot was coordinated for Vogue by Tyler Mitchell, the first black photographer to shoot a cover for the magazine in its 126-year history and one of the youngest photographers to do so.
Mitchell shared the news in a tweet on Tuesday.
A spokesperson for the National Portrait Gallery confirmed to BuzzFeed News that the portrait has been acquired, but is not currently on view to the public.
The museum is still in the planning stages of when the picture will be displayed, the spokesperson said.
Leslie
Ureña, the associate curator of photographs for the gallery, said
staffers were “thrilled to acquire this magnificent portrait.”
“This acquisition will allow us to document a significant shift in the history of fashion photography through the depiction of a key figure in American culture,” Ureña said in an emailed statement.
This will be the second portrait of Beyoncé to enter the museum’s collection, the first being a poster of the singer’s debut album, Dangerously in Love, which is currently not on display.
According to HuffPost, the performer was given an unprecedented amount of control over the September 2018 issue of Vogue, allowing her to be in charge of various details such as the photographer, which eventually opened the door for Mitchell.
In the extended captions that accompanied Mitchell’s photography, Beyoncé explained why she chose to work with the young black photographer.
“Until there is a mosaic of perspectives coming from different ethnicities behind the lens, we will continue to have a narrow approach and view of what the world actually looks like,” she said.
“It’s important to me that I help open doors for younger artists,” she added.
Mitchell, who previously shot for Teen Vogue and Marc Jacobs, told the New York Times that he depicts “black people and people of color in a really real and pure way.”
“There is an honest gaze to my photos,” he said.
Mitchell’s work will join the works of other black photographers featured in the gallery, including Kwame Brathwaite, Roy DeCarava, Gordon Parks, James Van Der Zee, and Augustus Washington.

‘Little Mermaid’ star Halle Bailey addresses racist casting backlash: ‘I don’t pay attention to the negativity’
Halle Bailey, who was cast at Ariel in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, is looking for positive vibes only.
Asked about the casting backlash after it was announced she nabbed the film role — racist trolls made comments about a black actress playing Ariel, a character that was white in Disney’s animated version — Bailey, 19, told Variety she blocking out any hate.
“I feel like I’m dreaming and I’m just grateful and I don’t pay attention to the negativity,” she replied. “I just feel like this role is something bigger than me — greater — and it’s going to be beautiful. I’m just so excited to be a part of it.”
At the same event, she told Entertainment Tonight that landing the role “means so much” to her. “Ariel was one of my favorite princesses growing up so it’s a dream come true. I’m very excited and happy.”
Her classy response to the backlash was applauded on social media, where she was reminded that she has “more support than … haters.”
Bailey has had support throughout the outcry. Jodi Benson, the original actress who voiced Ariel in the 1989 animated film, said, “I think the most important thing is to tell the story. We have, as a family, raised our children and for ourselves that we don’t see anything that’s different on the outside. I think that the spirit of a character is what really matters … And no matter what we look like on the outside, no matter our race, our nation, the color of our skin, our dialect, whether I’m tall or thin, whether I’m overweight or underweight, or my hair is whatever color, we really need to tell the story.”
Sierra Boggess, who originated the role of Ariel in the Broadway production of The Little Mermaid, also came to the singer’s defense.
Whyte Twitter Complains After ‘Black Actress’ Halle Bailey Is Cast As Ariel In ‘Little Mermaid’
Next up is finding out who Bailey’s co-stars in the film will be. ET asked who she thought should play Prince Eric — Harry Styles was reported “in talks” for the role — and Bailey replied, “I think that anyone would be great for it.”
She also addressed fans campaigning for Idris Elba to play Ariel’s father, King Triton. “I mean he’s awesome,” was her reply.
This week, Melissa McCarthy hinted she will be Ursula.
Before this film musical even hits screens, there will be more Mermaid coming. ABC announced The Little Mermaid Live — a live stage version based on the Broadway musical adaptation — will air on the TV network Nov. 5. It is also more representative ethically with Auli’I Cravalho as Ariel, Queen Latifah as Ursula and Shaggy as Sebastian.
