Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claims Border Police agents are forcing migrants to drink out of toilets and live under other extreme conditions — while the officers sit back and laugh.
I see why CBP officers were being so physically & sexually threatening towards me,” the congresswoman tweeted Monday after leaving a US Customs and Border Protection facility in Texas.
“Officers were keeping women in cells w/ no water & had told them to drink out of the toilets,” she said. “This was them on their GOOD behavior in front of members of Congress.”
The New York lawmaker was visiting a number of migrant detention centers scattered along the southern border on Monday with other congressional Democrats following reports of terrible conditions and repeated sexual assaults.
“Now I’ve seen the inside of these facilities,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “It’s not just the kids. It’s everyone. People drinking out of toilets, officers laughing in front of members Congress.”
She added, “I brought it up to their superiors. They said ‘officers are under stress & act out sometimes.’ No accountability.”
Ocasio-Cortez claimed that she “forced” herself into a cell with a group of female migrants and began speaking to them.
“One of them described their treatment at the hands of officers as ‘psychological warfare’ – waking them at odd hours for no reason, calling them wh*res, etc,” she said. “Tell me what about that is due to a ‘lack of funding?’”
The freshman legislator was planning to visit detention facilities in Clint — where the Trump administration “was denying children toothpaste and soap,” she said.
“This has been horrifying so far,” Ocasio–Cortez concluded. “It is hard to understate the enormity of the problem. We’re talking systemic cruelty w/ a dehumanizing culture that treats them like animals.”
A CBP official denied the toilet accusations on Monday, insisting that the locations Ocasio-Cortez visited have standard-issue jail-type appliances with sinks that dispense safe drinking water attached to toilets in a single unit.
“‘No one is drinking toilet water,” the official said. “They’re drinking potable water from the sink attached to the toilet.” It’s what you would find in every municipal jail in the United States.”
Ocasio-Cortez has accused CBP agents of making threats to her life on social media — saying a “secret Facebook group” of 9,500 officers discussed making a GoFundMe to harm her and the other Dems during their visits Monday.
“This isn’t about ’a few bad eggs,’” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted early Monday afternoon. “This is a violent culture.”
Rep. Judy Chu, of California, was among the congressional leaders who visited the centers with Ocasio-Cortez and also recounted what she saw on Twitter.
“‘If you want water, just drink from a toilet.’ That’s what border patrol told one thirsty woman we met on today’s #DemsAtTheBorder trip,” Chu tweeted, along with a video in which she described the conditions.
“What we saw was appalling and disgusting,” the congresswoman said. “There seriously has to be some changes.”
Monday’s border visit was met with outrage from local Trump supporters, who were caught on video heckling the Democratic lawmakers in both English and Spanish as they attempted to hold a press conference.
“Go take care of your country!” shouted one man, who repeatedly yelled “Trump 2020” with several others.
“You guys are retarded!” he added. “Cry me a river!”
Ocasio-Cortez, who spoke at the presser, got told to “go back to New York City” at one point.
“Nobody wants you here!” a heckler screamed.
“Did you bring your onion?!” another asked, blasting Ocasio-Cortez for shedding “fake tears.”
Videos from the presser were posted online by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Attempts to reach the group were not immediately successful.

Uber driver pulls out sex toy on cops who feared it was a gun
A Connecticut Uber driver was tackled to the ground by police who believed he was reaching for a gun — only for him to whip out a sex toy, authorities said.
Eliot Buenano-Andrade, 48, was allegedly caught masturbating in his white BMW sedan, which was pulled over with foggy windows in Monroe on Tuesday, according to the Connecticut Post.
He had an open case of beer on the passenger side, and when asked to recite the alphabet, started at “D” and ended at “K,” according to the report.
When he was ordered to get out of the car, Buenano-Andrade started reaching into his pants — and officers, fearing he was going to pull out a gun, wrestled him to the ground, the report said.
Buenano-Andrade instead yelled that it was a sex toy and pulled one out of his underwear.
The driver, from neighboring West Haven, was charged with interfering with police and driving under the influence. He was released after posting $1,000 bond, according to the report.
He told police he worked for Uber. The rideshare company did not immediately return the Connecticut Post’s requests for comment.

Man admits to killing girlfriend’s daughter after claiming she fell down stairs
A New Jersey man admitted to killing his girlfriend’s toddler daughter two years ago while committing robberies and doing heroin to “forget a lot of stuff,” a report said.
Travis Graham, 23, pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter on Friday for causing the death of 3-year-old Charlette Dawkins in 2017, according to NJ.com.
Graham initially claimed that Charlette fell down the stairs.
But after being arrested for a robbery in July of 2018, he told police that he backhanded the girl at the top of the stairs with such force that she “was spun around and fell down the steps face first,” the outlet said.
Graham also said he took part in some of the robberies for money to buy heroin.
“I just wanted to forget a lot of stuff,” he told police.
After pleading guilty on Friday, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office said it will recommend a sentence of 30 years in prison.

Mom allegedly killed 12-year-old son she had tried to drown as a baby
A California mom has been arrested for allegedly murdering her 12-year-old son — and critically injuring his brother — a decade after she was convicted of trying to drown him as a baby, according to authorities.
Sherri Renee Telnas, 45, was busted after 911 callers reported that she was acting “strangely” early Saturday as she walked the boys to a field near her home in Porterville, according to Tulare County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies found the boys unresponsive in a ditch, with the 12-year-old later pronounced dead at a hospital. His 7-year-old brother is in critical condition at Valley Children’s Hospital, according to officials.
Telnas was arrested at the scene and held on charges including murder and attempted murder, deputies said.
In 2009, the mom was convicted in Montana of trying to drown the same boy when he was a 10-month-old baby — and sentenced to 20 years in the custody of the state Department of Public Health and Human Services, according to the Missoulian.
Prosecutors said she had been “in the throes of mental illness” when she submerged herself and her baby in a river, eventually taking him to a hospital where she admitted, “I tried to drown my baby,” according to the report.
She pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal endangerment and ordered to undergo mental health treatment, according to the report.
At the time, the prosecutor said that her sentence “ensures that this won’t be repeated.”
Following the drowning attempt, the older child was put in his father Jacob Telnas’ custody, the Missoulian reported. It’s unclear how or why both boys were in her custody in California.
“We are aware of the Montana incident,” said Ashley Ritchie, a spokeswoman for the Tulare County sheriff, according to the Visalia Times-Delta. “We are working with multiple agencies to confirm the details.”
Officials have not said how the boy died pending an autopsy.
