5th grader dies after suffering injuries during fight at school
(Meredith) — A fifth grade student has died after she suffered serious injuries during a fight at her elementary school, officials said.
RaNiya Wright, 10, was injured during a classroom fight Monday at Forest Hills Elementary School in Walterboro, South Carolina, which is about 50 miles west of Charleston. The girl was airlifted to a hospital in Charleston where she remained unresponsive.
Two days later, on Wednesday, RaNiya died from her injuries. The exact injuries she suffered have not been released.
Another child involved in the fight has been suspended from the school indefinitely, the Colleton County School District told WCIV. Officials said no other students were involved.
The fight remains under investigation and authorities have not released further details about what happened.
According to WCSC, district officials and school administrators ended the fight and called emergency responders. Authorities said the school is cooperating with law enforcement, and a crisis response team is offering counseling and support to students and staff.
A GoFundMe account has been set up for the family to help with medical and funeral costs.
The Colleton County School District released the following statement:
