Jussie Smollett Case: Two Suspects Released Without Charges as New Evidence Emerges
Article via Variety
After two days of questioning, the Chicago Police Department announced Friday evening that it has released two suspects in the Jussie Smollett case without filing charges. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said that detectives had developed new information in the case. Police no longer consider the men to be suspects.
“Due to new evidence as a result of today’s interrogations, the individuals questioned by police in the Empire case have now been released without charging and detectives have additional investigative work to complete,” he said.
Also on Friday, defense attorney Michael Monico confirmed to Variety that he is now representing Smollett, one of the stars of “Empire.”
Smollett told police on Jan. 29 that two men attacked him, yelled homophobic and racial slurs, poured bleach on him, and put a rope around his neck. Local media has reported that investigators are looking into whether the incident was staged. The Chicago Police Department has said that it had no evidence of that, and that Smollett is still being treated as a victim.
Monico is a high-powered defense attorney with decades of experience. He recently represented Michael Cohen, President Trump’s former lawyer, in his criminal case.
The two men released Friday evening — who police have not officially identified — had been under arrest, though police never disclosed what charges they could potentially face. The attorney for the two Nigerian brothers told CBS Chicago that both know Smollett from “Empire,” and that they go to the same gym. The attorney denied that the men had attacked Smollett.
Police searched the home of the two brothers on Wednesday night, finding electronics, shoes, and bleach, according to local reports. Fox issued a statement on Thursday standing by the actor, and strongly dismissing a report that Smollett may have acted out because he was being written off the show.

21 students hospitalized after eating Valentine’s Day candy
ATLANTA — School officials said 21 students from a middle school south of Atlanta have been taken to hospitals after eating candy and snacks on Valentine’s Day.
Authorities with the city of South Fulton said it appeared that the Sandtown Middle School students became ill after eating some type of candy Thursday. They said the children experienced shortness of breath and other reactions.
City spokeswoman Ashley Minter-Osanyinbi said the students were taken to two local hospitals.
Fulton County Schools spokeswoman Susan Romanick said the students were first evaluated by paramedics, and then taken to two Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta campuses.
Romanick said she didn’t know what type of candy and snacks were eaten. She said that question is part of an investigation being done by the school system’s police department.

College softball coach used microwave excuse to see us naked
A University of Missouri-Kansas City women’s softball assistant coach is at the center of a long-running controversy involving alleged sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior.
Greg Bachkora is accused of frequently walking into his players’ locker room while they were getting dressed, telling them he needed to use the microwave located there, according to a report by the Kansas City Star.
“Some girls would have to cover themselves or duck behind the couch, scrambling to cover themselves,” a player’s father told the paper.
Other allegations against Bachkora, who remains on the staff despite taking a leave of absence, include kisses and a joke about female genitalia. He admitted kissing players on the head or cheek in a “fatherly, non-sexual manner” and copped to the inappropriate joke.
Complaints against Bachkora from several student-athletes resulted in the coach getting a new microwave in a common area, though they say the behavior hasn’t stopped after he spoke with the school’s Title IX officer.
“I still see the same behavior,” said one player who asked not to be identified. “I don’t think he comes in as often, but he still does it.”
He’s been on the staff since September 2016 after spending time with Benedictine College, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and the University of Northern Colorado.
Several players left UMKC in the wake of the Bachkora’s purported ongoing behavior, with one player’s father saying his daughter “didn’t want to leave UMKC but when they said they weren’t going to do anything about him, she had no choice.”
One player says she was told by an older player on the team that Bachkora “has seen me naked more than my boyfriend has.”
Complicating matters further, the school responded to the Star’s inquiry for comment on Bachkora by supplying a redacted Title IX report that named six softball players involved in an alcohol-related incident, which also named three of them as complainants against Bachkora. Identifying the student who made the allegations against their coach could be a violation of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Ac
Additional UMKC players have come to Bachkora’s defense, though the Star noted that the coaching staff, led by Meredith Smith Neal, asked players not to comment on the story and to only say positive things if contacted.

AGAIN?!? Florida man caught on camera licking doorbell (VIDEO)
LAKE WORTH, Florida — Another bizarre doorbell-licking incident was captured on camera, this time in Lake Worth, Florida.
In this latest video, a man is seen standing outside the homeowner’s front door before leaning in to lick the video doorbell several times.
The
man is holding what appears to be a stack of newspapers or a phone book
and pauses for a few seconds to point at various sections of what he’s
holding, though it’s unclear what he’s trying to point out. He leans in
for a few last licks before turning away.
The video became
public after the homeowner shared it to the video doorbell company’s app
on Jan. 24. The homeowner claims that the man seen in the video used to
live in the neighborhood but is now homeless.
“He’s asked my
husband for cigarettes a few times but now he’s coming around way to
(sic) much,” the homeowner wrote. “This was last (sic) straw. I’ve
notified the police.”
It’s unclear whether the man faces any charges.
The incident in Florida comes weeks after another man was recorded licking a video doorbell in California for three hours.

Mom’s rotting body concealed with 66 air fresheners
The discovery of a 78-year-old woman’s rotting body in a rocking chair led authorities to arrest her daughter, according to officials.
Jo-Whitney Outland, 55, was charged Monday after her mom was found dead surrounded by 66 air fresheners at their home in Bristol, Virginia, the Bristol Herald Courier reported.
Concerned relatives who hadn’t heard from Outland’s elderly mom, Rosemary, decided Monday to check on the woman at the residence, authorities said.
After Outland turned them away, saying her mom wasn’t home, they climbed through a window, according to police.
“They found what they believed was their deceased aunt inside the home,” Sgt. Steve Crawford told the Bristol Herald Courier. “They couldn’t tell for sure.”
The relatives called 911 and authorities entered the home to find Rosemary’s body under more than 50 blankets.
“I pulled back the blankets, and I see the body of an elderly female under these blankets,” Crawford said. “There were all of these air fresheners around.”
Officers wore protective suits as they dug through the blankets, car air fresheners and other items, to recover the body.
Police said there were no signs of foul play on her body and they believe she died from natural causes.
Near the body, there was a letter penned by Outland claiming her mother died in December 2018.
“It’s very bizarre,” Crawford said. “I don’t know what her future plans were.”
Police arrested Outland and charged her with felony concealment of a body.

Woman arrested for DUI tells African American deputy, ‘My KKK friends will burn your family’ and “You f***** with the wrong white people”
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida woman who was arrested for driving under the influence can be heard on body camera video threatening a sheriff’s deputy with violence, telling him, “My KKK friends will burn your family.”
“You f***** with the wrong white people,” 53-year-old Julie Edwards can be heard telling Deputy Brandon King. “KKK’s got your a**, boy.”
Edwards was arrested for driving under the influence and now faces charges for that along with resisting an officer without violence, making a threat against a law enforcement officer and refusing to submit for testing.
The arrest report says she also told the deputy, “n****rs should’ve never been let out of slavery.”
“Deputy King is of African-American descent and knows the history behind the KKK and the pain and torture they have caused and still cause to African-Americans today,” the arrest report says.
Deputy King smelled alcohol on Edward’s breath, noticed her slurring her speech and says she was uneasy on her feet, according to the arrest report. She refused to provide a breath sample or perform field sobriety tests.
While Deputy King was filling out paper work in his cruiser, Edwards began her verbal assault. She can be heard throughout the video threatening him.
She tells him the Ku Klux Klan will burn crosses on his property and says she hopes he doesn’t have any children.
“Kudos to Deputy King for his calm response to all the racist garbage this KKK enthusiast could throw at him,” Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said. “All law enforcement officers learn to deal with people at their worst, but this level of ignorance is something else. Great job Deputy King and thank you to everyone condemning the hate in this video!”
Edwards was arrested on February 8 and taken to the Volusia County Jail, but records show she is no longer in custody. She is scheduled to appear in court on March 6.
