Why I Can’t Celebrate Father’s Day
As We Celebrate, Our Government is Devastating Fathers at Our Borders and Around the World.
The irony almost slipped right by me even though my hypocrisy-radar is usually fine-tuned. Yet, it nearly missed me: America will be joyously celebrating Father’s Day while thousands of children of asylum seekers are being ripped from their parents and locked away in facilities. As we celebrate family and fatherhood, we as a nation are breaking the hearts of families and fathers at our borders and across the globe.
It wasn’t until I saw Speaker of the House Paul Ryan’s Father’s Day post of sweet fatherhood images overlayed with soft and reflective music that I began to choke on the irony. Here is a man — a father — with enough power to actually stop the barbarity taking place at our nation’s border — a father ostensibly opposed to Donald Trump’s actions — who saw fit to rub in the faces of every single asylum-seeking family how comfortable and privileged his fatherhood experience is. He brags of “family“ as he allows families to be torn apart for Donald Trump’s political agenda.
But as I prepared to stand on my stoop and lambast the Speaker for his hypocrisy, I gagged on my own: I, too, am privileged to raise my children in the safety and comfort of America’s borders. I, too, was preparing to celebrate Father’s Day at the same time our government is traumatizing hundreds of families already traumatized by the horrors for which they came to our borders seeking asylum.
Speaker of the House Paul Ryan may be a hypocrite, but I believe that if I celebrate Father’s Day while families are being broken — if not in my name, as a result of my tax dollars — then I cannot say that I am any better.
As We Celebrate, Our Government is Devastating Fathers at Our Borders and Around the World
How can I celebrate being a father knowing that my nation’s actions led to the death of Marco Antonio Muñoz — a Honduran asylum seeker so traumatized by being separated from his 3-year-old child by border patrol that he took his own life?
How can I celebrate being a father knowing of all of the fathers who had to bury their children because of America’s foreign policy, our drones, and the war crimes we commit or with which we are complicit?
I can’t celebrate Father’s Day this year because of how much I love my children and how broken I know another father is right now in Yemen after burying his emaciated child because of the civil war the United States is sponsoring.
I won’t pretend that I will protest until every single issue in the world is fixed. I know this is not feasible. But today, what I can do is use my platform to bring as much attention to the one issue I believe we can all fix immediately: we must stop Donald Trump’s policy of separating children of asylum seekers from their families.
Texas Senator Beto O’Rourke is using Father’s Day to bring attention to and to challenge the policy of separating families at the border:
I’m celebrating Father’s Day, not by celebrating myself or even allowing my friends and family to celebrate me; instead, I’m celebrating with a simple gesture: calling for the complete and total abolishment of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). ICE has become a modern-day Gestapo — Trump’s Secret Police using draconian tactics to entrap, kidnap, and deport immigrants of color.
Father’s Day this year is Abolish Ice Day for my family.
No. It’s not much. But it is the only thing that can make palatable the gagging-irony of celebrating being a father while our nation devastates fathers.
I am not asking you to do this. But I will ask that, at a minimum, as you think about the joys of fatherhood, take a single moment to think about all of the fathers our nation has devastated both here and abroad and then do whatever you can– even if it is a solitary protest as my own or, at a minimum, a social media post in their honor.

Bus Driver Tells Passengers Only U.S. Citizens Can Ride As Border Patrol Agent Looks On
Remember you are not obligated to answer questions about your citizenship just to ride a bus.
A bus driver in Maine told passengers they needed to be U.S. citizens to ride on a bus while an immigration official questioned passengers’ citizenship.
The incident happened in the city of Bangor over Memorial Day weekend, the ACLU of New Hampshire said in a video statement.
The footage shows passengers being confronted by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent…..

Here’s what the Air Force is doing about that recruit in the racist video
A drunken mouth tells no tales. When you’re drunk you’re tell the truth alcohol is a truth serum! Being racist is costly. Racist seem to always write a check they cannot pay.
The Air Force Reserve is kicking out a recent recruit who appeared in a racist video that went viral earlier this week.
The recruit, who Air Force Reserve Command would not name but has been identified elsewhere as Tabbie Duncan of St. Louis, Missouri, “is in the process of being released from her enlistment in the Air Force,” Lt. Col. Chad Gibson said in an email Thursday evening.
“The video, released days after her enlistment, is intolerable and does not reflect the values of the Air Force,” Gibson said.
The brief video spread quickly, and caused a firestorm of outrage online. In it, Duncan and a few others are shown riding down a dark road.
The cameraman says they were “hunting” n-words, and then identifies Duncan as his future sister-in-law. She is shown holding a beer bottle and says, “Get them” n-words.
The New York Daily News reported Tuesday that Duncan apologized in an interview, and said that she was drunk and is not racist.
“I was intoxicated,” Duncan told the Daily News. “I have black friends, I have black people in my family, I didn’t mean it. I didn’t know that I was being [recorded]. I am so sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt anybody, I was drunk. I need to seek help.”
Gibson told Air Force Times on Tuesday that Duncan enlisted in the Reserve on or about May 31. He said Air Force Reserve Command became aware of the video Monday evening and immediately began taking action.
“We expect all airmen to adhere to our core values, and treat others with a high level of dignity and respect,” Gibson said Tuesday. “This is intolerable, and we’re taking actions in response to it.”
The Daily News reported that the video was posted online Sunday.

Internet rips ‘tone-deaf jackass’ Paul Ryan for Father’s Day tweet about his kids while immigrant families are torn apart
House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) was soundly scolded on the internet after wishing “all of the dads” a happy Father’s Day as Republican President Donald Trump separates families at the border.
Speaker Ryan is a father of three children.
“My life changed the day I became a father. Liza, Charlie, and Sam are my highest priority,” Ryan tweeted. “Wishing all of the dads out there a happy early Fathers Day.”

“As a father who clearly cares for his children, Speaker Ryan should think of the agony that immigrant fathers are experiencing as their children are torn away from them due to the Trump Admin’s heartless policy and congressional Republicans’ complicity,” noted political scientist Miranda Yaver.
Hillary Clinton’s former national press secretary also had harsh words for Speaker Ryan.
“Paul Ryan is wishing a happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there, except those who may be seeking asylum in this country and have had their young children ripped from their arms,” argued Brian Fallon. “Those dads get Paul Ryan’s cowardly silence.”
“Except dads seeking asylum. In those cases, you are sitting by while this administration rips their children away and detains them,” noted Think Progress editor Judd Legum. “Those fathers will not be having a Happy Father’s Day.”
“Tell it to the dads who’ve had their kids taken from them by the president to gain leverage in congressional negotiation,” Vox writer Matthew Yglesias urged. “Visit one such dad, look him in the eye; and tell him how much your life changes and what a priority Liza, Charlie, and Sam are.”
“History will remember your inaction. I will happily teach it,” a fifth grade teacher promised.
Other commentators used harsher language.
You really are a spineless, tone-deaf jackass. How dare you boast about your ‘fatherhood,’ while supporting a policy and an administration that is tearing families apart,” Christine Fair suggested. “Those children will suffer permanent damage. You should be working to change this policy.”
“F*ck you and your shitty Vichy GOP that will go down in history for enabling the demise of American democracy,” she added.

I’m Sorry … I’m About to Die’: Mom Carjacked and Killed in Front of 3 Kids While Taking Them to Summer Program
https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/apos-apos-m-sorry-apos-185334881.html?.tsrc=daily_mail&uh_test=2_07A teen has been arrested in the carjacking shooting death of a Missouri mom who died in front of her three children while taking them to a summer day care program, reports say.
Porsha Owens, 28, was preparing to take her children, ages 3 to 8, to the program at 7:15 Monday when an 18-year-old suspect allegedly approached her, St. Louis County police told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The suspect — whose name has not been released — allegedly pulled up his shirt to cover his face and demanded Owens’ keys, money and purse. Police say that after fatally shooting Owens, he allegedly fled the scene after her car failed to start, according to the newspaper.
Officials from the St. Louis County Police Department were expected to issue warrants today against the 18-year-old currently in custody, Sgt. Shawn McGuire told the newspaper. He said more details would be released when the prosecutor files charges.
PEOPLE’s attempts to reach the St. Louis County Police Department were unsuccessful.
Owens’ cousin Keon King told local TV station WFMY that her oldest son stayed with his dying mother until an ambulance arrived.
According to King, the oldest son relayed to him that after she was shot, Owens looked up and said, “I’m sorry. I think I’m about to die.”
King added, “She didn’t have any chance. It apparently happened so quickly.”
Owens was a safety officer at the Riverview Gardens School District, which released a statement.

Target Pulls ‘Baby Daddy’ Father’s Day Card
Two weeks ago, Takeisha Saunders came across a Father’s Day card at Target in Rockwall, Texas, that immediately had her seething. It was allegedly the only card featuring a black couple, and it was actually a “Baby Daddy” card.
The inside of the card, created by American Greetings, read:
You’re a wonderful husband and father and I’m so grateful to have you as my partner, my friend, and my baby daddy! Happy Father’s Day.
Now, some may notice that the inside does note that the intended recipient of the card is a “husband,” but after the outrage hit social media, Target decided to pull the cards, according to the Kansas City Star.
“We want all guests to feel welcomed and respected when they shop at Target,” the statement said. “We were made aware of some concerns about this card last week and are working with our vendor to have it removed from Target stores. We appreciate the feedback and apologize. It’s never our intent to offend any of our guests with the products we sell.”
It’s interesting that Saunders wrote that the card wasn’t her narrative (even though, once again, it does say “husband” on the inside), but what about those people whose narrative does fit the card?
