Spike Lee’s BlacKkKansman gets standing Ovation at Cannes
Filmmaker Spike Lee’s latest offering, BlacKkKlansman, is set to be released on Aug. 10, the one-year anniversary of the deadly Charlottesville, Va., white nationalist rally. At its world premiere in Cannes, the film received 10 minutes of applause and standing ovation.
As the Hollywood Reporter notes, Lee was previously overlooked for the Palme d’Or in 1989 for Do the Right Thing. During the Cannes screening of BlacKkKlansman, the audience broke into applause a half-dozen times. At the end of the film, they clapped for four minutes during the credits and gave the film a six-minute standing ovation.
John David Washington (yes, son of Denzel and Pauletta) stars in the film as a black police officer who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970s. Adam Driver, Topher Grace and Laura Harrier also star in it.
The film’s trailer was released Monday

Baby found naked, lying in dirt after dad abandons him in Oregon forest
DESCHUTES COUNTY, Ore. — A 1-year-old boy was found naked in the dirt in an Oregon forest last week after his father reportedly set him down and walked away.
According to a post on the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, a desperate search for the boy began after his father, Brandon M. Blouin, 25, of Belpre, Ohio, wandered out of the woods early May 10.
Blouin told police that he, an 18-year-old woman and their son, Bradley Michael, had been staying in a vehicle in the forest. The woman had walked away from the vehicle at some point and left Bradley in the care of Blouin. Blouin waited for her to return but then took the child with him to look for her.
At some point, he put the child down and left him.
Blouin is believed to have been under the influence of a controlled substance when he set his son down on the forest floor, officials said.
The sheriff’s office started scouring for the baby with horseback searchers, drones and helicopters with thermal image sensors. At just after noon, the child was found lying in the dirt about one mile from the family’s vehicle. He was transferred into the care of medical personnel on scene.
Blouin now faces charges of criminal mistreatment, child neglect, endangering the welfare of a minor and assault. Authorities say the assault charge stems from an injury they believe the child suffered while in Blouin’s care.
The case remains under investigation.

Parents, 5-year-old girl shot to death at Mother’s Day gathering
STOCKTON, Calif. – Three people, including a 5-year-old girl, were killed in a shooting on 11th Street near Belleview Street late Sunday in the Northern California city of Stockton.
Police say the family was gathering for Mother’s Day when someone outside shot into the home. One man was pronounced dead at the scene. His young daughter and the girl’s mother later died at the hospital.
The scene, at the Sierra Vista Homes, is just a few blocks from Van Buren Elementary School.
Two other people were injured.
Stockton Police Officer Joe Silva called the shooting “senseless” while speaking with KTXL.
Investigators have not yet determined a motive for the shooting and did not have any information to release about the suspect.

4 arrested over ‘bodily fluid’-tainted cupcakes served to classmates
WINCHESTER, Conn. – Police arrested four people accused of serving cupcakes tainted with bodily fluid to their former classmates at a Connecticut high school, according to WTIC.
The two boys and two girls aren’t being identified since they were juveniles at the time of the incident. They face charges of conspiracy to commit fourth-degree sexual assault, fourth-degree sexual assault, and second-degree breach of peace.
The four allegedly served the befouled baked goods to classmates at The Gilbert School in Winchester last year.
A concerned parent, who asked to remain anonymous, told WTIC they distributed the cupcakes and acted as though they were doing it out of the kindness of their hearts.
“Then, during lunch, they bragged about putting ‘bodily fluids’ into the cupcakes to a small group of friends at lunch,” according to the parent. “They expected their friends to find it funny, but reactions apparently backfired.”
The cupcakes had the number 17 written on them in icing, but former student Kelsey Owens told WFSB that there was a code to the desserts.
“The kids they didn’t like got the ones with dashes through the seven so they knew those were the tainted ones,” Owens said.
“The case was presented to the prosecuting authorities (Juvenile Court) after an extensive forensic examination of the ‘cupcake’ and DNA comparisons of the suspect juveniles,” police said.
No staff or students reported falling ill after eating the cupcakes.
Dr. Anthony Serio, head of schools, issued the following statement about the arrests:
“Nothing is more important to us at The Gilbert School than the safety and well-being of our students, and as such we are grateful for the support and responsiveness shown to us by the Winchester Police Department throughout this difficult situation. We continue to work cooperatively with the police, and any further questions regarding this case should be directed to them.”

Parents arrested after 10 children found in ‘squalor’ describe years of torture
FAIRFIELD, Calif. – Two people were arrested after police in California say 10 children were rescued from “horrible” living conditions.
According to the police department, officers returned a missing 12-year-old boy to a home on Fieldstone Court in Fairfield, located roughly 45 miles northeast of San Francisco, on March 31.
Investigators say nine other children, ranging in age from 4 months to 11 years old, were living in “squalor,” in “unsafe” conditions.
Police arrested the father, 29-year-old Jonathan Allen, on felony counts of child abuse and torture. The mother, 30-year-old Ina Rogers, faces child neglect charges.
Fairfield Police Lt. Greg Hurlbut said during a press conference Monday that there was “garbage and spoiled food on the floor,” as well as “animal and human feces and a large amount of debris making large amounts of the house unpassable.”
Hurblut said he believed the children had been home-schooled, but couldn’t say if authorities had been contacted in the past about their living conditions.
Rogers claims the mess came from her tearing the house apart to look for her son in March. Lt. Hurlbut said officers found the boy sleeping under a bush in a neighbor’s yard.
After investigators entered the home, Rogers’ children were taken by child protective services and she was charged with child neglect.
During the following six weeks, investigators say the children started to open up about how Allen was treating them.
“The children described incidents of intentional abuse, puncture wounds, burns, bruising and injuries consistent with being shot with a pellet or BB gun,” Hurlbut said.
“When the children were safe with other family members it came to light that there was significant abuse and incidents of torture,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Sharon Henry said. “The children who were interviewed talked about the incidents, which went back several years.”
Allegations in the criminal complaint date back to 2014, Henry said.
On Friday, officers arrested Allen, charging him with nine counts of felony torture and six counts of child abuse.
“That’s why this is absolutely crazy,” Rogers said of the children’s father. “He was the nice guy. He was the one playing video games with them and I was telling them we need to clean up and do chores.”
Rogers allowed KTXL to see the conditions inside her home but she claimed the mess was made by the police department when they arrested Allen.
“They tore up everything and I haven’t had time to clean it because I’ve been back and forth to work. I work graveyard.” Rogers said.
But officers say the conditions between their first visit in March and their second on Friday had not improved, although they did conduct a search of the home.
“So objects were obviously moved while conducting that search but that was not the basis for the charges regarding the environment the children were in though,” Hurlbut said.
Allen is currently being held on $1.5 million bail at the Solano County Jail. Rogers was released after posting $10,000 bail following her March 31 arrest.
